  • Forests play a major role in global carbon (C) cycle, and the carbon density (CD) could reflect its ecological function of C sequestration. Study on the CD of different forest types on a community scale is crucial to characterize in depth the capacity of forest C sequestration.

  • This book is a collection of some of the invited talks presented at the international meeting held at the Max Planck Institut fiir Physik komplexer Systeme, Dresden, Germany during August 6-30, 2001, on the rapidly developing field of nanoscale science and bio-electronics (http://www.mpipks-dresden.mpg.de/~nanobio/). Semiconductor physics has experienced unprecedented developments over the second half of the twentieth century. The exponential growth in microelectronic processing power and the size of dynamic memories has been achieved by significant downscahng of the minimum feature size.

  • We measured and tested whether the following variables affect walking (basis: 200m buffer around each child's shortest walking path): number of busy intersections crossed, intersection and street density, total daily vehicle-miles traveled, average vehicle speed along the route, population density, and land use (R Wilson, 2008). Sidewalk coverage data do not exist for Roseville and could not be tested in the model. We refined the model through systematic testing of independent variables as the differ- ence in log-likelihood ratios.

  • By means of econometric methods, the information contained in options prices can be extracted. In the literature, two methods are most frequently chosen, namely the implied volatility and the risk-neutral density. The latter approach extends the frequently used concept of the volatility implicit in option prices to modelling the probabilities that market participants assign to all possible price levels of the underlying instrument. The entire RND offers a wider information set as it includes the third (skewness) and the fourth (kurtosis) moment of a distribution.

  • A large variety of nano- and microscale structures and devices, as well as NEMS and MEMS (systems integrate structures, devices, and subsystems), have been widely used, and a worldwide market for NEMS and MEMS and their applications will be drastically increased in the near future. The differences in NEMS and MEMS are emphasized, and NEMS are smaller than MEMS. For example, carbon nanotubes (nanostructure) can be used as the molecular wires and sensors in MEMS. Different specifications are imposed on NEMS and MEMS depending upon their applications.

  • We havemade a comprehensive and quantitative analysis of the lipid composition of caveolae from primary rat fat cells and compared the composition of plasma membrane inside and outside caveolae. We isolated caveolae from purified plasmamembranesusingultrasonication incarbonatebuffer to disrupt the membrane, or extraction with nonionic detergent, followed by density gradient ultracentrifugation. The carbonate-isolated caveolae fraction was further immunopurified using caveolin antibodies.

  • In modern usage, the term is used to describe devices capable of performing mechanical work, as in the original steam engine. In most cases the work is produced by exerting a torque or linear force, which is used to operate other machinery which can generate electricity, pump water, or compress gas. In the context of propulsion systems, an air-breathing engine is one that uses atmospheric air to oxidise the fuel carried rather than supplying an independent oxidizer, as in a rocket.

  • The carbon dioxide molecule becomes cluster to minimize the free energy; as a result pore nucleation is created. These pores cause the significant expansion of polymeric volume and decrease in polymeric density. A three- dimensional porous structure (scaffolds) is formed after completion of foaming process. The porosity of the scaffolds is controlled by the use of porogens like sugar, salts and wax (Ikada, 2006).
