Biofuels are gaining public and scientific attention driven by high oil prices, the need for energy
security and global warming concerns. There are various social, economic, environmental
and technical issues regarding biofuel production and its practical use. This book is
intended to address these issues by providing viewpoints written by professionals in the
field and the book also covers the economic and environmental impact of biofuels.
This text includes 14 chapters contributed by experts around world on the economy, evironment
and sustainability of biofuel production and use.
Forest ecosystems cover large parts of the terrestrial land surface and are major
components of the terrestrial carbon (C) cycle. Most important, forest ecosystems
accumulate organic compounds with long C residence times in vegetation, detritus
and, in particular, the soil by the process of C sequestration. Trees, the major components
of forests, absorb large amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) by
photosynthesis, and forests return an almost equal amount to the atmosphere by
auto- and heterotrophic respiration.
Carbon offsets are an innovative tool for allowing companies and individuals to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions beyond what they can easily achieve on their own. In the past
two years, interest in carbon offsets has grown dramatically as companies and concerned
consumers have sought ways to help mitigate climate change. However, the global
market for voluntary carbon offsets is currently unregulated, which has led to growing
concerns about whether buyers are really getting what they are paying for.
But there is another potential impact for the
environment and nature conservation which
is a much more positive one. The 1999
structural fund regulations for the first time
recognised that the funds could be used
for the protection and improvement of the
environment (emphasis added). This change
in wording was extremely significant – for
the first time the doors were open to local
and regional authorities and national governments
to start putting forward environmental
and nature programme proposals which
meet the European Union’s cohesion policy
objectives set out in the Treaty.
