  • Factor VII-activating protease (FSAP) circulates as an inactive zymogen in the plasma. FSAP also regulates fibrinolysis by activating pro-urokinase or cellular activation via cleavage of platelet-derived growth factor BB (PDGF-BB). As the Marburg I polymorphism of FSAP, with reduced enzymatic activity, is a risk factor for atherosclerosis and liver fibrosis, the regulation of FSAP activity is of major importance.

  • Sialidases are enzymes that influence cellular activity by removing terminal sialic acid from glycolipids and glycoproteins. Four genetically distinct sia-lidases have been identified in mammalian cells. In this study, we demon-strate that three of these sialidases, lysosomal Neu1 and Neu4 and plasma membrane-associated Neu3, are expressed in human monocytes.

Free radicals produced from the metabolic activities of oxygen attack biological membranes and lipoproteins via oxidation in a process called lipid perioxidation.   • GPI-anchored receptors do not have intracellular signaling domains. Instead, the mammalian Toll-like receptors (TLRs) transduce signals for cellular activation due to LPS binding. It has recently been shown that binding of microbial factors to TLRs to activate signal transduction occurs not on the cell surface, but rather in the phagosome of cells that have internalized the microbe. This interaction is probably due to the release of the microbial surface factor from the cell in the environment of the phagosome, where the liberated factor can bind to its cognate TLRs.
