  • Replication of DNA is essential for the propagation of life. It is somewhat surprising then that, despite the vital nature of this process, cellular organ-isms show a great deal of variety in the mechanisms that they employ to ensure appropriate genome duplication. This diversity is manifested along classical evolutionary lines, with distinct combinations of replicon architec-ture and replication proteins being found in the three domains of life: the Bacteria, the Eukarya and the Archaea.

  • GSM

GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications), is a standard set developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) to describe technologies for second generation digital cellular networks. Developed as a replacement for first generation analog cellular networks, the GSM standard originally described a digital, circuit switched network optimized for full duplex voice telephony. The standard was expanded over time to include first circuit switched data transport, then packet data transport via GPRS (General Packet Radio Services)....

  • This book presents basic and advanced principles underlying the multivalent interactions that are prevalent in biological systems. To illustrate important or complex concepts, the book provides up-to-date examples of synthetic multivalent molecules, their design, and their biological benefits. Functional roles displayed by such molecules of both natural and synthetic origin are well documented in biology, where they exert unique and crucial activities at a level not readily achievable by monovalent molecules.

  • This report originated in 1999 as a result of discussions between the Committee on Solar and Space Physics (CSSP) and officials within NASA’s Office of Space Science Sun- Earth Connections program. As noted in the statement of task (Appendix A), the objective of the study was to provide a scientific assessment and strategy for the study of magnetized plasmas in the solar system. By emphasizing the connections between locally occurring (solar system) structures and processes and their astrophysical counterparts, the study would contribute to a unified view of cosmic plasma behavior.

  • Within the last decade the interest in lipases has increased dramatically, and no doubt, this interest will be maintained in the future. Novel and powerful tools of molecular biology, crystallography, NMR technology and molecular modeling will continue to reveal new amino acid sequences and three-dimensional structures of lipases. In addition, transgenic and knockout animal models as well as the use of specific inhibitors will add knowledge about their mode of interaction with lipid substrates, cleavage mechanism and physiological roles in humans....

  • In summary, the DLEU2/miR-15a/16-1 tumor suppressor locus plays a role in regulating the expansion of the mature B-cell pool, by preventing the entry into G0/G1-S transition. The impairment of this cell cycle control in MDR-deleted cells may allow them to proliferate after BCR stimulation by foreign or self antigens. In these conditions, a model for the pathogenesis of CLL with 13q14 deletion based on the presumptive cellular origin of the tumor cell precursor can be proposed.

  • In 1856, Rudolf Virchow published “Cellular pathology” based on macroscopic and microscopic observation of diseases, and described a triad of factors on thrombosis. The three components were vascular change, blood flow alteration, and abnormalities of blood constituents. Although Virchow originally referred to venous thrombosis, the theory can also be applied to arterial thrombosis, and it is considered that atherothrombus formation is regulated by the thrombogenicity of exposed plaque contents, local hemorheology, and blood factors.

  • This paper makes a case that the global imbalances of the 2000s and the recent global financial crisis are intimately connected. Both have their origins in economic policies followed in a number of countries in the 2000s and in distortions that influenced the transmission of these policies through U.S. and ultimately through global financial markets. In the U.S., the interaction among the Fed’s monetary stance, global real interest rates, credit market distortions, and financial innovation created the toxic mix of conditions making the U.S.

  • DNA replication is fundamental to cellular life on earth, and replication initiation provides the primary point of control over this process. Replication initiation in all organisms involves the interaction of initiator proteins with one or more origins of replication in the DNA, with subsequent regulated assembly of two replisome complexes at each origin, melting of the DNA, and primed initiation of DNA synthesis on leading and lagging strands.

  • This paper reviews the range of traffic models, with particular attention to microsimulation. Although there are major types, there are so many hybrids that it is difficult to classify them all. The standard way of assigning traffic to a network is to find a static equilibrium from which no driver would be able to find a quicker route. This gives fairly good predictions of the link flows resulting from driver choices.

  • By standard indicators of competitiveness, the subprime loan origination market seems quite competitive: no participant has more than 13 percent market share (Bar-Gill 2008). By similar indicators, the credit-card market is even more competitive. For the subprime mortgage market, however, observers have argued that because borrowers find contract terms confusing, they do not do much comparison shopping, so the market is de facto not very competitive.
