  • In this paper, we study different centrality measures being used in predicting noun phrases appearing in the abstracts of scientific articles. Our experimental results show that centrality measures improve the accuracy of the prediction in terms of both precision and recall. We also found that the method of constructing Noun Phrase Network significantly influences the accuracy when using the centrality heuristics itself, but is negligible when it is used together with other text features in decision trees. ...

  • The central questions are: How useful is information about part-of-speech frequency for text categorisation? Is it feasible to limit word features to content words for text classifications? This is examined for 5 domain and 4 genre classification tasks using LIMAS, the German equivalent of the Brown corpus. Because LIMAS is too heterogeneous, neither question can be answered reliably for any of the tasks. However, the results suggest that both questions have to be examined separately for each task at hand, because in some cases, the additional information can indeed improve performance. ...

  • Signal Processing Toolbox Central Features The Signal Processing Toolbox functions are algorithms, expressed mostly in M-files, that implement a variety of signal processing tasks. These toolbox functions are a specialized extension of the MATLAB computational and graphical environment. Filtering and FFTs Two of the most important functions for signal processing are not in the Signal Processing Toolbox at all, but are built-in MATLAB functions: • filter applies a digital filter to a data sequence. • fft calculates the discrete Fourier transform of a sequence.

  • Even since computers were invented many decades ago, many researchers have been trying to understand how human beings learn and many interesting paradigms and approaches towards emulating human learning abilities have been proposed. The ability of learning is one of the central features of human intelligence, which makes it an important ingredient in both traditional Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging Cognitive Science.

  • Possessing a language is one of the central features that distinguishes humans from other species. Many people share the intuition that they think “in” language, hence that the absence of language would, ipso facto, be the absence of thought.

  • This book addresses the fundamental questions concerning the economic reinvigoration of society through policies aimed at encouraging the development of small enterprises. Governments in Europe, the rest of the industrialised world and developing countries are increasingly including small enterprise development as a central feature of economic and social policies. Nowhere was this more evident than during the 1980s in Britain, as the Conservative government sought to establish an enterprise culture.

  • Conserving Living Natural Resources provides students, managers, and general readers with an introduction to the principles of managing biological resources. It presents the historical and conceptual contexts of three seminal approaches to the management of living natural resources: utilitarian management for harvest of featured species and control of unwanted species, protection and restoration of populations and habitats to maintain biodiversity, and management of complex ecosystems to sustain both productivity and biodiversity.

  • This manual describes the Telephone Line Simulator-4A which tests telephones and other telecommunications devices. The TLS-4A Telephone Line Simulator offers a convenient means for setting up temporary “telephone lines” to demonstrate or test equipment where actual central office lines are not easily available. The TLS-4A provides four simulated lines, two “talk paths” or connections, and an audio interface port, making it a versatile device for a variety of applications including:

  • Four years after the launch of the euro in January 1999 and while the European Central Bank (ECB) plans a review about its monetary policy strategy, it seems interesting to study the link between monetary policy, the long-term perception of ináation and long-term interest rates. In the European case, it is possible to use the German term structure as a benchmark.

  • The second result underlines the interest of a two-factor model rather than a one factor model to represent the stochastic dynamics of interest rates. For example, Balduzzi, Das and Foresi (1998) show the presence of a stochastic central tendency in the dynamics of the short and long term interest rates which explains that the level of the short rate is not the only relevant variable to describe its conditional mean.

  • In a similar way, environmental considerations are frequently viewed as barriers to profitability. They are viewed as necessary evils, costs to be minimized, or regulations with which to comply. The environment is rarely considered central to business strategy unless there is some regulation that constrains business goals, a mess to clean up, or a public issue which pits executives against environmentalists. Historically, business people neither have been encouraged nor discouraged to get involved with environmental concerns.

  • England gained more operational independence and the long-term ináation target was known, the dynamics of the long-term forward rate was more stable. Orphanides andWilliams (2003) demonstrate also on a theoretical basis how the observed overreaction of long-term interest rates to the short-term interest rate could be explained by the presence of imperfect knowledge and a perpetual learning process by agents about the structure of the economy and the policymaker preferences.

  • Today, through television, most Americans have been exposed to the application of forensic science to the justice system. Programs such as Law and Order, CSI, Crossing Jordan, Cold Case Files, Forensic Files, and American Justice feature police activities, forensic laboratory technology, and courtroom procedures. These programs have made the public aware of the important role that forensic science plays in the criminal justice system, and enrollment in criminal justice and forensic science courses in college and high school has increased markedly within the last 10 years....

  • International criminal law is a new branch of law, with one foot in international law and the other in criminal law. Until the Nuremberg trial, international criminal law was largely ‘horizontal’ in its operation – that is, it consisted mainly of co-operation between states in the suppression of national crime. Extradition was therefore the central feature of international criminal law.

  • To capture several features of housing booms, we look at three variables: real credit to the private sector, residential investment and real house prices. Apart from interest rates, all variables are in logs. The data is taken from the OECD Economic Outlook, the IMF International Financial Statistics (IFS), and the BIS Macro database. The variables and data sources are listed in the appendix. We estimate the model on quarterly data over the period of the Great Moderation from 1984 Q1 to 2007 Q2 with two lags.

  • The definition of gender roles is so central in Afghan society and culture, that any perceived or planned changes require consultations not only with the household but also with the larger community. Men and women to a large extent share the same cultural ethos and values, including their conception of gender roles, and they seek to validate these within their communities. Years of turmoil have furthermore left communities to their own devices, strengthening the inherent distrust of external authorities and increased reliance upon conservative values.
