Low specific speed centrifugal pumps have low flow rates and high heads. They are widely
applied in the petroleum, chemical, aerospace, pharmaceuticals, metallurgy, and light
industries, among others. With the development of space technology and petrol chemical
industry, the highly stable cavitation performance of centrifugal pumps has been put
forward. Poor cavitation performance is one of the key problems in low specific speed
The centrifugal pumps with the actual configuration constitute a machine widely used for more than 150 years. The pumps are analyzed and examined in detail, a lot of experience from the design, construction and application of centrifugal pumps is accumulated worldwide but still there is an endless number of topics that need supplementary examination, mainly of topics arising from the interaction between the pump and the pumping installation.

we are happy to present the first English edition of the
book: ’The Centrifugal Pump’. We have written the book
because we want to share our knowledge of pump hydraulics,
pump design and the basic pump terms which
we use in our daily work.
’The Centrifugal Pump’ is primarily meant as an internal
book and is aimed at technicians who work with
development and construction of pump components.

A centrifugal pump is a rotating machine in which flow and pressure are generated
dynamically. The inlet is not walled off from the outlet as is the case with positive dis-
placement pumps,whether they are reciprocating or rotary in configuration. Rather, a cen-
trifugal pump delivers useful energy to the fluid or “pumpage” largely through velocity
changes that occur as this fluid flows through the impeller and the associated fixed pas-
sageways of the pump; that is, it is a “rotodynamic” pump.
When Val and I decided to collaborate and write the first edition, our
goal was to produce an easy-to-read, easy-to-understand, practical text-
book stressing hydraulic design, that could be of hands-on use to the
pump designer, student, and rotating equipment engineer. Although feed-
back from readers indicates that we achieved our desired goal, we did
recognize that we had omitted several important topics.
Larry Bachus and Angel Custodio met each other in the early 1990s in
Puerto Rico. Larry was working on a pump and seal conversion in a
pharmaceutical chemical plant and Angel was installing a computerized
preventive maintenance system in the same plant. They had passed each
other in the administrative offices at the plant and one day the
maintenance engineer introduced them and suggested they work
together. They became fast friends and have worked together on
numerous projects over the years since, including this book....
