First placed on the market in 1939, the design of PID controllers remains a challenging area that requires new approaches to solving PID tuning problems while capturing the effects of noise and process variations. The augmented complexity of modern applications concerning areas like automotive applications, microsystems technology, pneumatic mechanisms, dc motors, industry processes, require controllers that incorporate into their design important characteristics of the systems.
Landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW), which include unexploded ordnance
(UXO) and abandoned explosive ordnance, represent a major threat to civilian. This
demands that all the mines and ERW affecting the places where ordinary people live must
be cleared, and safety of people in areas that have been cleared must be guaranteed.
When the concept of a network without wires was first suggested more than two
decades ago, it sparked the imagination of scientists, product vendors, and users
around the globe eager for the convenience and flexibility of a free roaming connection.
Unfortunately, as the variety of wireless solutions began to emerge, anticipation
turned to disappointment. The first wave of solutions proved inadequate
for the networking, portability, and security needs of a changing IT environment.
Students for whom English is a second or additional language (or dialect) are a
growing segment of British ColumbiaÕs K-12 school population. Over the
past ten years, the number of students identified as needing ESL services in BC
has more than tripled. Lower Mainland school districts have been especially affected,
and educators in those districts have had to develop skills and processes to address the
growing need. With continuing growth in the numbers of ESL students provincewide,
however, the need to provide appropriate ESL services is becoming an issue for districts
in all areas of BC.
With the new millennium comes change. Indoor air quality methodologies
have expanded, evolved, andmorphed. The focus is shifting froma knee-jerk
to a more proactive response. Although indoor air quality in older buildings
will continue to present old challenges, new construction is going forward
with new challenges.
The development of robust accuracy assessment methods for the validation of spatial data
represents a difficult challenge for the geospatial science community. The importance and timeliness
of this issue are related directly to the dramatic escalation in the development and application of
spatial data throughout the latter 20th century. This trend, which is expected to continue, will
become increasingly pervasive and continue to revolutionize future decision-making processes.
Stereopsis is a vision process whose geometrical foundation has been known for a long
time, ever since the experiments by Wheatstone, in the 19th century. Nevertheless, its
inner workings in biological organisms, as well as its emulation by computer systems,
have proven elusive, and stereo vision remains a very active and challenging area of
research nowadays. In this volume we have attempted to present a limited but relevant
sample of the work being carried out in stereo vision by researchers from around
Chemistry plays a key role in conquering diseases, solving energy problems, addressing environmental problems, providing the discoveries that lead to new industries, and developing new materials and technologies for national defense and homeland security. However, the field is currently facing a crucial time of change and is struggling to position itself to meet the needs of the future as it expands beyond its traditional core toward areas related to biology, materials science, and nanotechnology....
Nonetheless, data is data, and whilst the interpretation may be suspect (which can
happen with even the best controlled studies), the data is the most valuable asset in a
research paper. Of course insight that either consolidates or furthers our
understanding is vital, but without data it can be nothing more than an armchair idea.
Many journals require the highest levels of scientific rigour, which may make some
research inaccessible - really a form of scientific censorship.
In all different areas in biomedical engineering, the ultimate objectives in research and education are to improve the quality life, reduce the impact of disease on the everyday life of individuals, and provide an appropriate infrastructure to promote and enhance the interaction of biomedical engineering researchers. This book is prepared in two volumes to introduce recent advances in different areas of biomedical engineering such as biomaterials, cellular engineering, biomedical devices, nanotechnology, and biomechanics.
There are few areas of economic policy- making in which the returns to good decisions
are so high – and the punishment of bad decisions so cruel – as in the management of
natural resource wealth. Rich endowments of oil, gas and minerals have set some coun-
tries on courses of sustained and robust prosperity; but they have left others riddled with
corruption and persistent poverty, with little of lasting value to show for squandered
wealth. And amongst the most important of these decisions are those relating to the tax
treatment of oil, gas and minerals....
The Programme aims at providing a comprehensive
coverage incorporating all the important subject
areas and disciplines relevant to international
business. Equal emphasis has been placed on the
quantitative and analytical approach to the study of
International Business Management. It also
attempts to provide comparative perspectives in
many facets of International Business by covering
methods of doing business as well as trade ...
Technology development, mainly for telecommunications and computer systems, was a key factor for the interactivity and, thus, for the expansion of e-learning. This book is divided into two parts, presenting some proposals to deal with e-learning challenges, opening up a way of learning about and discussing new methodologies to increase the interaction level of classes and implementing technical tools for helping students to make better use of e-learning resources.
The Panel on Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence was established in early 1992 by the Naval
Studies Board (NSB) of the National Research Council in response to a request from the Naval Research
From non-profit performance space to galleries, to
businesses that offer classes, to specialty supply shops,
to the individual artist entrepreneur and contractor,
neighborhood arts activity is an identifiable business
sector. In some communities, artist entrepreneurs play
a similar early entrant role for commercial strips as
they do for artist housing development.
As economists who study business clusters recognize,
geographical proximity and the interactions that
emerge from related activities within a local area are
important even in the age of electronic connectivity.
MASSEY IS YOUR GATEWAY TO A FUTURE
At Massey University we’re in the business of shaping
future leaders and transforming the way the business
world works. We offer our students the opportunity to
develop the knowledge and skills they’ll need to excel in
any area of business.
Massey’s College of Business strives to create a
stimulating learning and research environment to enrich
our students, our partners in the community, and our
Climate change is happening now. Climate-induced disasters are occurring
in the Asia Pacific region, where a distinctly increasing trend has been
observed in recent decades. This shows that the region is the most disaster
prone, compared with other parts of the world. Studies on the causes of
disaster in many affected regions suggest that in a typical disaster, cities with
high population density see increases in mortality and number of people
affected. Increased economic losses within the region are also inevitable.
Children and adolescents with good mental health are able to achieve and maintain
optimal psychological and social functioning and well-being. They have a sense of
identity and self-worth, sound family and peer relationships, an ability to be productive
and to learn, and a capacity to tackle developmental challenges and use cultural
resources to maximize growth. Moreover, the good mental health of children and
adolescents is crucial for their active social and economic participation.
