  • Chemistry: A Maths Workbook – Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 workbooks are intended for first year undergraduate Chemists. They are split into three in order to reduce file size and make handling on a laptop easier. Part 1 covers the first 8 weeks of semester 1; Part 2 the remainder of semester 1 and the beginning of semester 2; and Part 3 the rest of semester 2. This workbook is not a textbook! Use your Chemistry and Maths textbook to find out the details about the area covered. People will not really understand something, including Maths, until they can...

  • I was pleased to respond to Ventus Publishing to write a textbook (which is split into 3 more manageable books, “Chemistry Maths 1”, “Chemistry Maths 2”, and “Chemistry Maths 3” which should be studied in sequence) that would help Chemistry students survive, and even enjoy, the Maths required for a Chemistry degree. I developed and presented tutorials on Maths to our first year Chemistry students over several years at the Chemistry Department, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland. These tutorials have formed the basis for this workbook.

  • The emerging field of nanotechnology is affirming its increasing importance day by day. In this context fullerenes and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) play an important role. These new allotropic forms of carbon have been discovered in the last two decades, and, since then, they have stimulated the curiosity and interest of physicists and chemists. This book is the first of a new series entitled “Carbon Materials: Chemistry and Physics”, the purpose of which is to analyze the new frontiers of carbon.

  • The science of conserving artworks and other items of cultural significance has undergone considerable change since 1982 when this series was instigated, mostly involving the development or application of new materials or techniques. Their understanding by conservators, restorers and students continues, nonetheless, to depend on familiarity with the underlying scientific principles which do not change and which are clearly explained in these books.

  • Chapter 22 - What does the benzene ring do to its substituents? After attending lectures, reading the text and working assigned problems related to this chapter, students will have acquired the following knowledge and abilities: Given the IUPAC name of a phenol derivative, be able to draw its structure; know how resonance influences the stability of benzylic cations, anions, and radicals as compared to similar non-benzylic species; be able to apply a benzyl ether as a protecting group in multi-step synthesis; given a series of phenols, be able to rank their relative acidity.

  • This third edition of Analytical Chemistry for Technicians is the culmination and final product of a series of four projects funded by the National Science Foundation’s Advanced Technological Education Program and two supporting grants from the DuPont Company. The grant funds have enabled me to utilize an almost limitless reservoir of human and other resources in the development and completion of this manuscript and to vastly improve and update the previous edition. A visible example is the CD that accompanies this book.

  • If the text you're using for general chemistry seems to lack sufficient mathematics and physics in its presentation of classical mechanics, molecular structure, and statistics, this complementary science series title may be just what you're looking for. Written for the advanced lower-division undergraduate chemistry course, The Physical Basis of Chemistry, Second Edition, offers students an opportunity to understand and enrich the understanding of physical chemistry with some quantum mechanics, the Boltzmann distribution, and spectroscopy.

  • Thermodynamics is one of the most exciting branches of physical chemistry which has greatly contributed to the modern science. Being concentrated on a wide range of applications of thermodynamics, this book gathers a series of contributions by the finest scientists in the world, gathered in an orderly manner. It can be used in post-graduate courses for students and as a reference book, as it is written in a language pleasing to the reader. It can also serve as a reference material for researchers to whom the thermodynamics is one of the area of interest....

  • Volume 41 of the Handbook on the Physics and Chemistry of Rare Earths adds four chapters to the series: two focus on nanoscale rare-earth mate- rials, while the other two are concerned with divergent topics—the arrangement of the rare-earth elements in the periodic table, and the higher order rare-earth chalogenide compounds with the elements of the 14th group and also In. The first chapter (248) discusses the various proposals suggested for the location of the rare-earth elements in the periodic table from the time of Mendeleev to the present day.

  • THE publication of this series of pamphlets has been undertaken to make available in a permanent form complete detailed directions for the preparation of various organic chemical reagents. In announcing this purpose it may be well to mention at the outset some of the difficulties in the way of the research chemist, which it is hoped this series will be able to overcome. The cost of chemicals is prohibitive to the majority of chemists; this was true before the war when Kahlbaum's

  • Science progresses by a symbiotic interaction between theory and experiment: theory is used to interpret experimental results and may suggest new experiments; experiment helps to test theoretical predictions and may lead to improved theories. Theoretical Chemistry (including Physical Chemistry and Chemical Physics) provides the concep- tual and technical background and apparatus for the rationalisation of phenomena in the chemical sciences. It is, therefore, a wide ranging subject, reflecting the diversity of molecular and related species and processes arising in chemical systems.

  • Few of us can any longer keep up with the flood of scientific literature, even in specialized subfields. Any attempt to do more and be broadly educated with respect to a large domain of science has the appearance of tilting at windmills. Yet the synthesis of ideas drawn from different subjects into new, powerful, general concepts is as valuable as ever, and the desire to remain educated persists in all scientists.

  • This book is part of the Green Chemistry series published by the Royal Society of Chemistry, and is designed to provide a modern overview of the current status of insecticides. We present the current approaches for insect pest control as green alternatives to classical agrochemicals, which should be of interest to a vast group of researchers: agrochemists, biochemists, chemists, toxicologists, etc. Throughout the book, the different approaches to pest control which involve ‘‘greener chemicals’’ in particular are emphasized.
