In the early theoretical models, the level of stress of
caregivers was seen as a risk factor that linked elder
abuse with care of an elderly relative (36, 37).
While the popular image of abuse depicts a
dependent victim and an overstressed caregiver,
there is growing evidence that neither of these
factors properly accounts for cases of abuse.
Although researchers do not deny the component
of stress, they tend now to look at it in a wider
context in which the quality of the overall
relationship is a causal factor (30, 34, 38).
This volume broadens the scope of Trauma and Disaster: The Structure of Human
Chaos to include an expanded focus on a special type of disaster, terrorism. Terrorism
seeks to achieve political, ideological, or theological goals through a threat or
action that creates extreme fear or horror. Many believe that terrorism (and torture)
produce the highest rates of psychiatric sequelae amongst all types of disasters.
Good nutrition is one of the key foundations for the development of a healthy, productive population.
Well nourished people are less likely to become ill or die, and are more productive and better able
to learn. Achieving good nutrition, particularly among women and children, is associated with
important short and long term health, educational and economic benefits.
In DWI/DUI cases involving child passengers or victims, traffic prosecutors should consider the
applicability of generic child endangerment or abuse statutes. In People v. Cruz, 576 N.Y.S. 978
(N.Y. Criminal Ct. 1991), the defendant drove his car with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC)
of .18 grams per deciliter with his two children in the car. The court recognized the inherent
dangers of impaired driving and held that there was sufficient evidence to find the defendant
guilty of endangering the welfare of a child. Similarly, in State v. Miller, 1995 Ohio App.
