  • This book gives an account of the modern view of the global circulation of the atmosphere. It brings the observed nature of the circulation together with theories and simple models of the mechanisms which drive it. Early chapters concentrate on the classical view of the global circulation, on the processes which generate atmospheric motions and on the dynamical constraints which modify them. Later chapters develop more recent themes including low frequency variability and the circulation of other planetary atmospheres....

  • ‘Climate models’ is a very broad topic, so a single volume can only offer a small sampling of relevant research activities. This volume of 14 chapters includes descriptions of a variety of modeling studies for a variety of geographic regions by an international roster of authors. The climate research community generally uses the rubric ‘climate models’ to refer to organized sets of computer instructions that produce simulations of climate evolution.

  • The litho-hydrodynamic and environmental conditions in the Vietnamese coastal estuarine basin are significantly affected by the land-ocean-atmosphere interaction processes whish tide has a determining role. Application of the coupled 1D, 2D and 3D modeling system could resolve this complicated problem but it requires other solutions related with the boundary and coupling conditions.

  • The mechanisms accounting for poor expression of the BCR in CLL remain elusive. There is no evidence of genetic defects in the BCR components [62, 63] and in contrast with their poor expression at the membrane level, transcription and intra-cellular synthesis of BCR components are normal [63, 64]. However, they cannot be assembled and transported from the endoplasmic reticulum to the cell surface because of a folding and glycosolation defect of the mu and CD79a chains though not of the CD79b chain.

  • In the Asian monsoon and adjacent regions, the aerosol forcing and responses of the water cycle are even more complex. Both direct and indirect effects may take place locally and simultaneously, interacting with each other. In addition to local effects, monsoon rainfall may be affected by aerosols transported from other regions and intensif ied through large-scale circulation and moisture feedbacks.

  • Any study forecasting conditions four decades hence will be faced with large uncertainties and these need to be borne in mind in interpreting the results of this study. One uncertainty concerns the pathway of GHG emissions. To address that issue, the city case studies examined both a high and a low GHG emissions scenario to bracket the likely future conditions. In the climate change downscaling methodologies, there are uncertain- ties in forecasting the increase in extreme and seasonal precipitation under the different sce- narios.

  • To assess the explanatory power of a trust-based explanation, we start by modeling the impact of trust on portfolio decisions. Not only does the model provide testable implications, but it also gives us a sense of the economic im- portance of this phenomenon. In the absence of any cost of participation, a low level of trust can explain why a large fraction of individuals do not invest in the stock market. In addition, the model shows that lack of trust amplifies the effect of costly participation.

  • Examples of duct dependent circulations include critical coarctation of the aorta (duct dependent systemic circulation) or pulmonary atresia (duct dependent pulmonary circulation). In critical coarctation there is extreme narrowing of the aorta just where the arterial duct joins the aorta, and blood supply to the lower half of the body is only possible if it passes from the pulmonary artery to the descending aorta via the duct. In pulmonary atresia, the only blood supply to the lungs is that which passes from the aorta to the pulmonary artery via the duct.

  • Cyclones are a key element of the atmospheric circulation in the midlatitudes (Carlson, 1998). Cyclogenesis, for which a first conceptual model was presented by the Bergen school (Bjerknes, 1910), occurs most frequently at the polar front. The various ascending and descending airstreams typically associated with these cyclones carry a range of different chemical signatures (Cooper et al., 2002). The so-called warm conveyor belt (WCB) – a strongly ascending airstream ahead of a cyclone’s cold front (Browning et al.

  • One of the great things about the Internet is that you can access all your favorite content at the touch of a button and all for free, right? Not for much longer. In 2013 we will see an increase in the amount of content shifting away from ad-supported business models to pay-per-view or subscription-based models. Driving the change is the rapid decline in audiences for the big players of traditional media.

  • This is the first of two reports that address the complex issue of incorporating the needs of climate research into the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS). NPOESS, which has been driven by the imperative of reliably providing short-term weather information, is itself a union of heretofore separate civilian and military programs. It is a marriage of convenience to eliminate needless duplication and reduce cost, one that appears to be working.

  • Mixed layers grew to depths of 2,500 to 4,000 meters, with a rapid period of growth beginning shortly before noon and lasting for several hours. Significant differences between the mixed-layer temperatures in the basin and outside the basin were observed. Data analyses and models provide evidence that the circulations are highly complex and that relatively weak upper-level synoptic systems had an impact on the local and regional thermally driven flows in the area.

  • The main method of cognition of the performance of biological systems is their mathematical modeling. The essence of this method should reflect the principle of optimization in biology[9]. Any biosystem cannot function if its energy consumption is inadequately high. The same is applicable to the blood circulatory system. Its main function is to transport blood throughout the body in order to maintain the proper gaseous exchange, deliver important substances to viscera and tissues in living body and remove decay products.

  • Retinol-binding protein transports retinol, and circulates in the plasma as a macromolecular complex with the protein transthyretin. Under acidic con-ditions retinol-binding protein undergoes a transition to the molten globule state, and releases the bound retinol ligand. A biased molecular dynamics simulation method has been used to generate models for the ensemble of conformers populated within this molten globule state.
