  • This book is intended to bring solution protein chemistry to proteomic technology and to provide a different perspective from other review works. Proteomics, while a diffuse area, is an extension of classical protein chemistry largely driven by major advances in the analytical capability of mass spectrometry. The content assembles together some disparate areas into a single volume. The author has also tried to use as much classical protein chemistry literature as possible as this serves as the intellectual basis for proteomics.

  • Recent advances in clinical proteomics have propelled us into an exciting period of discovery of new cancer biomarkers, although the available proteomic technologies have their limitations. The principles of proteomic technology require stringent guidelines for the collection of clinical material, the application of analytical techniques, and for our interpretation of the data. In this review, we present an overview of the serum tumor markers in current use.

  • The book Renal Failure – The Facts consists of some facts about diagnosis, etiopathogenis and treatment of acute and chronic renal failure. Acute, as well as chronic renal failure is great medical problems and their treatment is a burden for the budget of each government. Acute kidney injury (AKI), previously termed acute renal failure, is a frequent clinical condition in critically ill patients especially, in intensive care units (ICU). Its incidence varies from 1-7 % of all hospitalized patients to 30-50 % of patients in ICU....

  • Both Planned Parenthood and the alternative sites we interviewed typically had relationships with other local health care providers. Thus, changes that affect one set of clinics, like Planned Parenthood, may have repercussions for other providers in the communities. Clinics often refer patients for care at other facilities if they cannot provide the services themselves. For example, if a woman is diagnosed with diabetes in a WHP exam at a family planning clinic, she would be referred to a community health center or public primary care clinic for further follow- up and care.

  • Co-cyprindiol (ethinylestradiol and cyproterone acetate; Dianette®, Clairette®) is indicated primarily for acne or hirsutism but it is also contraceptive and concerns have been raised about fetal exposure to cyproterone acetate. The SPC for Dianette29 advises that pregnancy must be excluded before treatment is begun, and states that animal studies have revealed that feminisation of male fetuses may occur if cyproterone acetate is administered during the phase of embryogenesis at which differentiation of the external genitalia occurs.

  • The objective of this current chapter is to review the techniques whose potential to noninvasively determine Breslow index has been studied. Basic and technical principles of each technique will be mentioned as well as their accuracy in the determination of a factor whose importance in the clinical management of melanoma is so important as previously demonstrated. Currently Breslow index is measured by the anatomo-pathologist after incisional or excisional biopsy of the suspected lesion. So why non invasive determination of Breslow index would be of utmost clinical value?...

  • However, there are patients with two negative biopsies who continue with a high suspicion of cancer, with a persistently elevated PSA or pre-malignant histology report such as prostate intraepithelial neoplasia grade 3 or atypical microacinar proliferation. The evidence suggests that cancers diagnosed with the third or fourth biopsy are those of low grade and volume (Djavan, 2001). The key question is how often is it justified to re-biopsy the patient that perhaps does not have a cancer that is life threatening.

A driving aspect of international health informatics is that telecommunication technology, rehabilitative technology, intelligent home technology and many other components are moving together and form one integrated world of information and communication media. The complete series has been accepted in Medline. Volumes from 2005 onwards are available online....

  • Personalized cancer medicine is defined as medical care based on the particular biological characteristics of the disease process in individual patients. By using genomics and proteomics, individuals can be classified into subpopulations based on their susceptibility to a particular disease or response to a specific treatment. They may then be given preventive or therapeutic interventions that will be most effective given their particular characteristics.

  • An intensive weight loss program in Slovenia including behavioral, psychological, cognitive and physical ele- ments has shown promising long-term results on 48 sub- jects [21]. Median weight loss of completers when they left the program was 11.5 kg. At least 5 years later, 13 of them still maintained the reduced weight. It is important to note that only participants who had successfully completed at least 4 months of treatment were included in the analysis.

  • Coinciding with the option explosion, a large academic literature has emerged (See Murphy, 1999, for a summary) that examines the way in which executive compensation, and stock options in particular, has affected the agency relationship. The evidence suggests that the low pay-to- performance relationship estimated by Jensen and Murphy (1991) has been dramatically strengthened by the stock option explosion since executives now generally have very large holdings of company stock and stock options in their portfolios (Hall and Liebman, 1998).
