Consolidation of applications in cloud computing environments presents a significant opportunity for energy optimization. As a first step toward enabling energy efficient consolidation, we study the inter-relationships between energy consumption, resource utilization, and performance of consolidated workloads. The study reveals the energy performance trade-offs for consolidation and shows that optimal operating points exist. We model the consolidation problem as a modified bin packing problem and illustrate it with an example.

We propose the moving parabolic approximation (MPA) model to reconstruct an improved point-based surface implied by an unorganized point cloud, while also estimating the differential properties of the underlying surface. We present examples which show that our reconstructions of the surface, and estimates of normal and curvature information, are accurate for precise point clouds and robust in the presence of noise.

test scores during adolescence. Our preferred point estimate indicates that an
additional year of preschool television exposure raises average adolescent test
scores by about 0.02 standard deviations. We are able to reject negative effects

The term cloud computing refers to an Internet-based technology through which
information is stored in servers and provided as a service (Software as a Service,or
SaaS) and on-demand to clients (from the clouds indeed). Its impact will be spec-
tacular on both consumers and firms. On one side, consumers will be able to ac-
cess all of their documents and data from any device (the personal laptop, the mo-
bile phone, an Internet Point..), as they already do for email services, and to
exploit impressive computational capabilities.
