  • Progress in collaborative networks continues showing a growing number of manifestations including virtual organizations, virtual enterprises, dynamic supply chains, professional virtual communities, collaborative virtual laboratories, etc. with a wide spectrum of application domains. The realization that all these collaborative forms represent variations of a more general paradigm has lead to their consolidation into Collaborative Networks (CN) as anew scientific discipline.

  • Collaboration is a process by which individuals and/or groups work together on a practical endeavor. Collaborative work is a fundamental feature of organizations and is increasingly being supported by technology. The advent of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) in network formation and support has enabled collaboration to take place on a virtual dimension, regardless of time and location.

  • We describe a corpus-based investigation of proposals in dialogue. First, we describe our DR/compliant coding scheme and report our inter-coder reliability results. Next, we test several hypotheses about what constitutes a well-formed proposal. 1 Introduction we report our findings .on tracking agreement. 2 Tracking Agreement Our corpus consists of 24 computer-mediated dialogues 1 in which two participants collaborate on a simple task of buying furniture for the living and dining rooms of a house (a variant of the task in (Walker, 1993)). ...

  • Many of the world’s problems—violence, overpopulation, substance abuse, poverty, terrorism, infant mortality, HIV/AIDS, chronic disease— involve human behavior. Since countries are increasingly interdependent, cross-national collaboration is imperative. U.S. psychological scientists can take an active role, working with colleagues in and from other countries, to improve the world’s capacity to address these pressing issues. International research collaboration in the psychological, behavioral, and social sciences is critical to improving the quality of peoples’ lives worldwide.

  • We propose a collaborative framework for collecting Thai unknown words found on Web pages over the Internet. Our main goal is to design and construct a Webbased system which allows a group of interested users to participate in constructing a Thai unknown-word open dictionary. The proposed framework provides supporting algorithms and tools for automatically identifying and extracting unknown words from Web pages of given URLs. The system yields the result of unknownword candidates which are presented to the users for verification. ...

  • We propose a plan-based approach for responding to user queries in a collaborative environment. We argue that in such an environment, the system should not accept the user's query automatically, but should consider it a proposal open for negotiation. In this paper we concentrate on cases in which the system and user disagree, and discuss how this disagreement can be detected, negotiated, and how final modifications should be made to the existing plan.

  • In collaborative planning activities, since the agents are autonomous and heterogeneous, it is inevitable that conflicts arise in their beliefs during the planning process. In cases where such conflicts are relevant to the t~t~k at hand, the agents should engage in collaborative negotiation as an attempt to square away the discrepancies in their beliefs. This paper presents a computational strategy for detecting conflicts regarding proposed beliefs and for engaging in collaborative negotiation to resolve the conflicts that warrant resolution.

  • This paper presents collaborative decoding (co-decoding), a new method to improve machine translation accuracy by leveraging translation consensus between multiple machine translation decoders. Different from system combination and MBR decoding, which postprocess the n-best lists or word lattice of machine translation decoders, in our method multiple machine translation decoders collaborate by exchanging partial translation results.

  • Even though collaboration in peer learning has been shown to have a positive impact for students, there has been little research into collaborative peer learning dialogues. We analyze such dialogues in order to derive a model of knowledge co-construction that incorporates initiative and the balance of initiative. This model will be embedded in an artificial agent that will collaborate with students.

  • This paper proposes the use of uncertainty reduction in machine learning methods such as co-training and bilingual bootstrapping, which are referred to, in a general term, as ‘collaborative bootstrapping’. The paper indicates that uncertainty reduction is an important factor for enhancing the performance of collaborative bootstrapping.

  • A model of plan recognition in discourse must be based on intended recognition, distinguish each agent's beliefs and intentions from the other's, and avoid assumptions about the correctness or completeness of the agents' beliefs. In this paper, we present an algorithm for plan recognition that is based on the SharedPlan model of collaboration (Grosz and Sidner, 1990; Lochbaum et al., 1990) and that satisfies these constraints. INTRODUCTION To make sense of each other's utterances, conversational participants must recognize the intentions behind those utterances.

  • This paper presents a computational model of how conversational participants collaborate in making referring expressions. The model is based on the planning paradigm. It employs plans for constructing and recognizing referring expressions and meta-plans for constructing and recognizing clarifications. This allows the model to account for the generation and understanding both of referring expressions and of their clarifications in a uniform framework using a single knowledge base.

  • Machine translation (MT) systems have improved significantly; however, their outputs often contain too many errors to communicate the intended meaning to their users. This paper describes a collaborative approach for mediating between an MT system and users who do not understand the source language and thus cannot easily detect translation mistakes on their own. Through a visualization of multiple linguistic resources, this approach enables the users to correct difficult translation errors and understand translated passages that were otherwise baffling. ...
