  • This book applies pharmacology to nursing practice, with the overall aim of enhancing patient care. The main focus of the book is adverse drug reactions, and the implications for patient monitoring. Adverse drug reactions account for around 4% of UK hospital admissions. Over 70% of these problems are avoidable (Pirmohamed et al. 2004): the monitoring of prescribed medications has long been a cause for concern (Royal College of General Practitioners 1985, DH 2000, Audit Commission 2001, Committee of Public Accounts 2006).

  • Iam blessed with loving, supportive, and compas- sionate family. Without my family, I would not be who I am today. My family gave me time to write, brought in take-out dinners, shared my home office (quietly most of the time), and always asked about “the book.” I love my family and want to dedicate this book to my husband John, my son Thomas, my sister Vicki, my brother-in-law Peter, my nephew Scott and his wife Subin, and Christopher—my nephew who dedicated his short life to his children. Your love helps me be all that is possible. Blessings and Namaste....

  • Though enrollment is growing, nursing schools turned away more than 67,000 qualified applications in 2010, including more than 11,000 applications to graduate programs. This trend is particularly troublesome given the great need to expand the number of nurse faculty, which requires preparation at the graduate level. The primary reasons reported by schools for not accepting all qualified applicants were a shortage of faculty and clinical placement sites as well as deep funding cuts at the state and local levels. ...

  • In addition to the discussions on whether a two-pronged approach should be adopted, the session also offers an opportunity to discuss which gender issues should be prioritized in a future development agenda. There has been a call to focus on women’s strategic priorities which will help to transform women’s lives in the long-term. It has also been suggested that the new goals should reflect an understanding that women’s poverty is, in part, a result of their socially enforced gender roles and relations.

There were respondents from 194 of these facilities across 30 states. Half of the respondents were from CCRF, while the other half were from nursing homes. This was done to determine the need for training within the LTC workforce. Questions were aimed at preparedness for public health emergencies, including the threat of bioterrorism (BT).

  • Nearly 25 years ago, I found myself at one of those crossroads in life. I was nearing the completion of a liberal arts bachelor’s degree, and like so many graduating college students, I had no clue as to which career would utilize the education I had worked so hard to complete. I feared that I would be one of those proverbial waiters, waiting tables while waiting for something better to come along. While scanning the employment section in the local paper, I noticed the numerous employers seeking registered nurses.

  • The state of the national economy has a profound effect on career interests and the choices of prospective job seekers. This is reflected in part by the variation in the number of people seeking admission to vocational schools, colleges, universities, and professional schools at different periods in time. The variable economic cycle also influences, to some extent, those considering health-care careers. Nevertheless, the aging population has greatly increased the demand for professionals and paraprofessionals in the health-care field.

  • Despite some concerns about new college graduates finding employment in today’s tight job market, graduates of baccalaureate nursing programs are securing positions at a significantly higher rate than the national average. In August 2010, AACN conducted an online survey of nursing schools offering entry-level baccalaureate and graduate programs in the U.S. to better assess the experience of new graduates seeking employment. The survey found that the average job offer rate at the time of graduation was 65% for new nurses based on data collected from 402 schools.

  • Professional football players earn more than ministers or nurses. Social workers with college degrees generally earn less than truck drivers, who may not have completed high school. Professors of accounting typically earn more than professors of history with equivalent educational background and teaching experience. Even if your history professor is an outstanding teacher, capable of communicating effectively and concerned about students’ problems, she probably earns less than a mediocre teacher of accounting.
