The development and writing of this report presented considerable challenges in terms of both the
study schedule and the need to avoid conveying sensitive U.S. vulnerabilities to potential adversaries.
Meeting both challenges has been difficult for the study committee and staff, but every effort was made
to respond to the stated need of the Technology Warning Division of the Defense Intelligence Agency
(DIA) for maximum openness.
I wish to express my appreciation to the members of the committee for their contributions to the
preparation of this report.
This volume constitutes the Proceedings of the 9th International Congress
of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science arranged by the Division of
Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science of the International Union of
History and Philosophy of Science. The logical sections of the Congress also
constituted the European Logic Colloqium '91. The Congress took place in
Uppsala, Sweden, from August 7 to August 14, 1991.
Sometimes solidarity groups study the Women in Business manuals or other reading
materials together. In some village banks the solidarity group members screen each
other’s loan proposals and give suggestions. They can recommend to the management
committee whether or not a loan should be granted.
If one of the members of a solidarity group is having a problem with her business the
others might help her make her loan payment. Or if one of the members has to go to
the market for buying or selling, another member might look after her children. Since

This thesis describes the development, implementation and preliminary results of the Arginine and Vitamin D Adjunctive Therapy in Pulmonary Tuberculosis (AVDAPT) randomised controlled trial.
I had a central role in developing and implementing the study protocol collaboratively with my PhD supervisors Associate Professor Paul Kelly (Australian National University, Canberra) and Professor Nicholas Anstey (Menzies School of Health Research, Darwin), and with additional input from the investigators listed in Appendix 1.
The Joint Forum supports continued efforts by firms to further develop such methodologies in
spite of the difficulties associated with both the need to reconcile differing time horizons for
risk assessment and the measurement of diversification benefits. However, it should be
noted the potential for excessive optimism when making simplifying assumptions in the
calculation of risk measures that span multiple categories of risk.
As WLANs (Wireless Local Area Networks) become increasingly common, it's becoming vital to be able to test them for proper performance and to optimize their operation. This book, written by a member of the IEEE committee that develops WLAN standards, is the first book addressing that need. It covers test equipment and methods for the RF (wireless) and physical layers of WLAN, protocols, the application layer, and manufacturing testing.
In November 2004, building upon the recommendations established in the RSSS,
the CPSS and the Technical Committee of IOSCO published the Recommendations for
central counterparties (RCCP). The RCCP provided 15 recommendations that addressed the
major types of risks faced by CCPs. A methodology for assessing a CCP’s observance of
each recommendation was included in the report.
This National Research Council (NRC) study, commissioned
by the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) in response
to a mandate from Congress, addresses the question
of whether there are alternatives to antipersonnel landmines
(APL)—including technologies, tactics, and operational concepts.
The study was conducted at an interesting historical
juncture, when the United States is at peace and, at the same
time, the number of new technologies rich in military possibilities
is unprecedented. The convergence of these two factors
presents the U.S.
Technological innovations are key causal agents of surprise and disruption. These innovations, and the disruption
they produce, have the potential to affect people and societies and therefore government policy, especially
policy related to national security. Because the innovations can come from many sectors, they are difficult to
predict and prepare for. The purpose of predicting technology is to minimize or eliminate this surprise.
The parameters for method validation have been defined in different working groups of
national and international committees and are described in the literature. Unfortunately,
some of the definitions vary between the different organizations. An attempt at harmonization
was made for pharmaceutical applications through the ICH where representatives from the
industry and regulatory agencies from the United States, Europe and Japan defined
parameters, requirements and, to some extent, methodology for analytical methods validation....
