  • Data communications and networking are changing the way we do business and the way we live. Business decisions have to be made ever more quickly, and the decision makers require immediate access to accurate information. Why wait a week for that report from Germany to arrive by mail when it could appear almost instantaneously through computer networks? Businesses today rely on computer networks and internetworks.

  • As one of the fastest growing technologies in our culture today, data communications and networking presents a unique challenge for instructors. As both the number and types of students are increasing, it is essential to have a textbook that provides coverage of the latest advances, while presenting the material in a way that is accessible to students with little or no background in the field. Using a bottom-up approach,

  • This paper describes the application of the PARADISE evaluation framework to the corpus of 662 human-computer dialogues collected in the June 2000 Darpa Communicator data collection. We describe results based on the standard logfile metrics as well as results based on additional qualitative metrics derived using the DATE dialogue act tagging scheme. We show that performance models derived via using the standard metrics can account for 37% of the variance in user satisfaction, and that the addition of DATE metrics improved the models by an absolute 5%. ...

  • Chapter 1 - Introduction. This chapter addresses four issues: data communications, networks, protocols and standards, and standards organizations. First, we give a broad definition of data communications. We then define networks as a highway on which data can travel. We also discuss different types of protocols and the difference between protocols and standards. Then, we give a brief review of the standards organizations that we refer to throughout the book. Finally, we discuss network models.

A grid is simply a pool of computers that provides needed resources for applications on an as-needed basis. The goal is to provide comput- ing resources that transparently scale to the user community, much as an electri- cal utility company can deliver power to meet peak demand by accessing energy from other power providers’ plants via a power grid.

  • There are many occasions when data need to be transmitted over a voice communication network. Many people use a computer to connect to their Internet Service Provider via the telephone lines to transmit and receive data, check their email, surf the Web, etc. Telephone networks were originally built for human speech, not for computer data and is unsuitable for digital communication in its raw form.

  • For example, communicating between two PCs via a telephone line (connected between subscriber's home and local office, then between local offices, and finally between local office and another subscriber's home). The telephone line is an analog system. That means it can not be used for digital transmission. If we try to transmit digital signals over the analog system, our bit rate or bandwidth will be limited to a minimum. On a 4 kHz analog band limited system we can only transmit at a maximum rate of roughly 1 kHz. Because a 1 kHz digital signal needs a bandwidth of 5...
