  • A context-sensitive approach to sustainable planning and development helps to protect public health, safety, andwelfare. By avoiding inherent site problems, or constraints, and by capitalizing on inherent site assets, or opportunities, site planners can limit long-term maintenance costs and, more important, reduce the risks to life and property from natural hazards. The careful analysis of sites—and the site’s context—can lead to better development proposals and, ultimately, to higher-quality built environments. Qualified site planners and designers are vital to this process.

  • This book is the result of my taking a course in writing study plans from Carl Stoltenberg in 1964, and then trying to teach such a course at three different universities for more than thirty years. It is intended to be a primer for those who haven’t done much, or any, scientific research. The focus is on thinking carefully and writing a plan before starting to attack the research in the laboratory or field. I have learned continually from the students in my course and from the various people who have helped me teach it. I dedicate the book to all of them, and particularly to...

  • Our experience with a critiquing system shows that when the system detects problems with the user's performance, multiple critiques are often produced. Analysis of a corpus of actual critiques revealed that even though each individual critique is concise and coherent, the set of critiques as a whole may exhibit several problems that detract from conciseness and coherence, and consequently assimilation. Thus a text planner was needed that could integrate the text plans for individual communicative goals to produce an overall text plan representing a concise, coherent message. ...

  • Existing models of plan inference (PI) in conversation have assumed that the agent whose plan is being inferred (the actor) and the agent drawing the inference (the observer) have identical beliefs about actions in the domain. I argue that this assumption often results in failure of both the PI process and the communicative process that PI is meant to support. In particular, it precludes the principled generation of appropriate responses to queries that arise from invalid plans. I describe a model of P1 that abandons this assumption. It rests on an analysis of plans as mental phenomena.
