  • Networks must be able to transfer data from one device to another with complete accuracy. Data can be corrupted during transmission. For reliable communication, errors must be detected and corrected.Single bit errors are the least likely type of errors in serial data transmission because the noise must have a very short duration which is very rare. However this kind of errors can happen in parallel transmission.

  • Bacon (1989) rightly said, “Reading makes a full man, conference a ready man, and writing an exact man”. Writing is an important medium and it is used for different purposes. Writing performs many functions in a person’s day to day life in different areas like academic, official, media, social, cultural and personal settings. Communication to a major extent is carried on through the medium of writing – personal correspondence, telegrams, circulars, reports, memos, minutes of meetings, instructions, email messages, assessment reports, project reports etc.

  • The landmass on which we live is an integral part of our water catchment. Any human activity will inevitably have some consequences on the availability and composition of fresh waters. These consequences are becoming increasingly important and detectable as the human population grows. The problem is to be addressed at the global scale, as frequently, decisions made have inter-regional and international impacts, and must therefore be coordinated. In a number of European Member States, for example, the availability of water resources depends on the activities of other upstream countries.

  • Toxicogenomics, the study of how genomes respond to exposure to toxi- cants, may ultimately hold the promise of detecting changes in the expres- sion of a person's genes if he or she is exposed to these toxicants. As the technology rapidly develops, it is critical that scientists and the public communicate about the promises and limitations of this new field. Commu- nicating technical information to the public about a developing science can be challenging, particularly when the applications of that science are not yet well understood.

  • Data were included from individuals participating in a prospective study of 2,126 Medicare recipients, 65 years and older, residing in a single community in Northern Man- hattan. Each person received the same medical, neurological and neuropsychological evaluations at regular intervals. The cohort was followed over a 7-year period beginning in 1992. Three follow-up examinations took place at 20-month in- tervals after the baseline interview. Over the study period, the annual mortality rate has been 8.

  • Community-based knowledge forums, such as Wikipedia, are susceptible to vandalism, i.e., ill-intentioned contributions that are detrimental to the quality of collective intelligence. Most previous work to date relies on shallow lexico-syntactic patterns and metadata to automatically detect vandalism in Wikipedia. In this paper, we explore more linguistically motivated approaches to vandalism detection.

  • We address the issue of on-line detection of communication problems in spoken dialogue systems. The usefulness is investigated of the sequence of system question types and the word graphs corresponding to the respective user utterances. By applying both ruleinduction and memory-based learning techniques to data obtained with a Dutch train time-table information system, the current paper demonstrates that the aforementioned features indeed lead to a method for problem detection that performs significantly above baseline.

  • The rapid and continuous growth of social networking sites has led to the emergence of many communities of communicating groups. Many of these groups discuss ideological and political topics. It is not uncommon that the participants in such discussions split into two or more subgroups. The members of each subgroup share the same opinion toward the discussion topic and are more likely to agree with members of the same subgroup and disagree with members from opposing subgroups.

  • Quantifying the semantic relevance between questions and their candidate answers is essential to answer detection in social media corpora. In this paper, a deep belief network is proposed to model the semantic relevance for question-answer pairs. Observing the textual similarity between the community-driven questionanswering (cQA) dataset and the forum dataset, we present a novel learning strategy to promote the performance of our method on the social community datasets without hand-annotating work. ...
