  • The divisibility properties of Dirichlet L-functions in infinite families of characters have been studied by Iwasawa, Ferrero and Washington. The families considered by them are obtained by twisting an arbitrary Dirichlet character with all characters of p-power conductor for some prime p. One has to distinguish divisibility by p (the case considered by Iwasawa and FerreroWashington [FeW]) and by a prime = p (considered by Washington [W1], [W2]). Ferrero and Washington proved the vanishing of the Iwasawa µ-invariant of any branch of the Kubota-Leopoldt p-adic L-function. ...

  • In [2], the problem of discovering sequential patterns over large databases of customer transactions is considered. The proposed algorithms generate a data sequence for each customer from the database and search on this set of se- quences for a frequent sequential pattern. For example, the algorithms can discover that customers typically rent “Star Wars,” then “Empire Strikes Back,” and then “Return of the Jedi.

  • We consider the problem of answering complex questions that require inferencing and synthesizing information from multiple documents and can be seen as a kind of topicoriented, informative multi-document summarization. The stochastic, graph-based method for computing the relative importance of textual units (i.e. sentences) is very successful in generic summarization.

  • The idea of “nugget pyramids” has recently been introduced as a refinement to the nugget-based methodology used to evaluate answers to complex questions in the TREC QA tracks. This paper examines data from the 2006 evaluation, the first large-scale deployment of the nugget pyramids scheme. We show that this method of combining judgments of nugget importance from multiple assessors increases the stability and discriminative power of the evaluation while introducing only a small additional burden in terms of manual assessment. ...

  • A formalism is presented for lexical specification in unification-based grammars which exploits defeasible multiple inheritance to express regularity, subregularity, and exceptions in classifying the properties of words. Such systems are in the general case intractable; the present proposal represents an attempt to reduce complexity while retaining sufficient expressive power for the task at hand. Illustrative examples are given of morphological analyses from English and German.

  • Although most NLP researchers agree that a level of "logical form" is a necessary step toward the goal of representing the meaning of a sentence, few people agree on the content and form of this level of representation. An even smaller number of people have considered the complex action sentences that are often expressed in taskoriented dialogues. Most existing logical form representations have been developed for single-clause sentences that express assertions about properties or actual actions and in which time is not a main concern.

  • Diabetes mellitus is a complex, progressive disease, which is accompanied by multiple complications. It is a metabolic disorder of the endocrine system and listed among the most common disorders in both developed and developing countries. It has a global metabolic epidemic and it is estimated that the number of people affected by the disease will rise from the current 150 to 230 million by 2025. Hyperglycaemia is a characteristic feature of diabetes mellitus and chronic hyperglycaemia could lead to long-term complications in the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and blood vessels.

  • ADAPTIVE COMMUNICATIONS AND THE BOOK LAYOUT In order to justify the content of the book and to make suggestions on how the book should be studied, we start with the generic block diagram of a digital communication system shown in Figure 1.1. The standard building blocks, information source, source encoder, encryptor, channel encoder and data modulator are used to produce a narrowband signal, for example, binary phase shift keying (BPSK), quaternary phase shift keying (QPSK) or M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation MQAM carrying information content.

  • In an increasingly complex world, decision analysis has a major role to play in helping decision makers to gain a greater understanding of the problems they face. The main aim of this book is to make decision analysis accessible to its largest group of potential users: managers and administrators in business and public sector organizations, most of whom, although expert at their work, are not mathematicians or statisticians.

  • I wrote this text for a one semester course at the sophomore-junior level. Our experience with students taking our junior physics courses is that even if they’ve had the mathematical prerequisites, they usually need more experience using the mathematics to handle it efficiently and to possess usable intuition about the processes involved. If you’ve seen infinite series in a calculus course, you may have no idea that they’re good for anything.

  • Modeling multi-level complex systems is the object of this book. Complex systems are assemblies of several subsystems and are characterized by emergent behavior resulting by nonlinear interactions among subsystems for multiple levels of organization. The complexity of numerous systems is rooted in the existence of many levels of self-organization corresponding to different time and space scales. There is a need to provide general frameworks able to combine several scales and reality levels of the complex systems in one coherent and transdisciplinary discourse.
