  • The effect of chitosan, glucose and chitosan–glucose complex (CGC) on the microbial and postharvest quality of shiitake (Lentinus edodes) mushroom stored at 4 ± 1 C for 16 days was investigated. Mushroom weight loss, respiration rate, firmness, ascorbic acid, total soluble solids, microbial and sensory quality were measured. The results indicate that treatment with CGC coating maintained tissue firmness, inhibited increase of respiration rate, reduced microorganism counts, e.g., pseudomonads, yeasts and moulds, compared to uncoated control mushroom.

  • This book is inspired by boredom and fascination: boredom with the usual presentation of data structures and algorithms, and fascination with complex systems. The problem with data structures is that they are often taught without a motivating context; the problem with complexity science is that it is usually not taught at all. In 2005 I developed a new class at Olin College where students read about topics in complexity, implement experiments in Python, and learn about algorithms and data structures. ...

  • The machining of complex sculptured surfaces is an important technological topic in modern manufacturing, namely in the molds and dies sector. Today, this sector, with great importance to automotive, aircraft and others advanced industries, is placed in all industrialized or emerging countries. In the recent past, the traditional technology employed in molds and dies manufacture was a combination of con- ventional milling and electro-discharge machining (EDM) or electrochemical machining (ECM).

  • In this section we will define what we mean by a complex func- tion. We will then generalise the definitions of the exponential, sine and cosine functions using complex power series. To deal with complex power series we define the notions of conver- gent and absolutely convergent, and see how to use the ratio test from real analysis to determine convergence and radius of convergence for these complex series. We start by defining domains in the complex plane. This requires the prelimary definition....

  • Let b ≥ 2 be an integer. We prove that the b-ary expansion of every irrational algebraic number cannot have low complexity. Furthermore, we establish that irrational morphic numbers are transcendental, for a wide class of morphisms. In particular, irrational automatic numbers are transcendental. Our main tool is a new, combinatorial transcendence criterion. 1. Introduction Let b ≥ 2 be an integer. The b-ary expansion of every rational number is eventually periodic, but what can be said about the b-ary expansion of an irrational algebraic number? ...

  • As we were at pains to point out in the companion volume to this monograph, entitled Complexity in Chemistry: Introduction and Fundamentals, complexity is to be encountered just about everywhere. All that is needed for us to see it is a suitably trained eye and it then appears almost magically in all manner of guises. Because of its ubiquity, complexity has been and currently still is being defined in a number of different ways. Some of these definitions have led us to major and powerful new insights.

  • What makes populations stabilize? What makes them fluctuate? Are populations in complex ecosystems more stable than populations in simple ecosystems? In 1973, Robert May addressed these questions in this classic book. May investigated the mathematical roots of population dynamics and argued-counter to most current biological thinking-that complex ecosystems in themselves do not lead to population stability.

  • We describe the strategy currently pursued for verbalising OWL ontologies by sentences in Controlled Natural Language (i.e., combining generic rules for realising logical patterns with ontology-specific lexicons for realising atomic terms for individuals, classes, and properties) and argue that its success depends on assumptions about the complexity of terms and axioms in the ontology.

  • This paper explores the role of information retrieval in answering “relationship” questions, a new class complex information needs formally introduced in TREC 2005. Since information retrieval is often an integral component of many question answering strategies, it is important to understand the impact of different termbased techniques.

  • Results of computational complexity exist for a wide range of phrase structure-based grammar formalisms, while there is an apparent lack of such results for dependency-based formalisms. We here adapt a result on the complexity of ID/LP-grammars to the dependency framework. Contrary to previous studies on heavily restricted dependency grammars, we prove that recognition (and thus, parsing) of linguistically adequate dependency grammars is~A/T'-complete.

  • Electron transfer proteins transport electrons safely between large redox enzymes. The complexes formed by these proteins are among the most transient. The biological function requires, on the one hand, sufficient spec-ificity of the interaction to allow for rapid and selective electron transfer, and, on the other hand, a fast turnover of the complex.

  • Dominance links were introduced in grammars to model long distance scrambling phenomena, motivating the definition of multiset-valued linear indexed grammars (MLIGs) by Rambow (1994b), and inspiring quite a few recent formalisms. It turns out that MLIGs have since been rediscovered and reused in a variety of contexts, and that the complexity of their emptiness problem has become the key to several open questions in computer science.

  • Hierarchical HMM (HHMM) parsers make promising cognitive models: while they use a bounded model of working memory and pursue incremental hypotheses in parallel, they still achieve parsing accuracies competitive with chart-based techniques. This paper aims to validate that a right-corner HHMM parser is also able to produce complexity metrics, which quantify a reader’s incremental difficulty in understanding a sentence.
