  • In recent years, the U.S. Army has become increasingly interested in “commonality”—the sharing of common parts across different entities. Commonality has implications for procurers, designers, developers, trainers, logisticians, and operators. Unfortunately, commonality is poorly defined and conceptualized, which can contribute to confused discussion and poor decisionmaking. For example, engines are often described as “common,” even if significant components, such as the turbocharger, have been removed to make the engines fit different vehicle types.

  • A semi-automatic procedure of linguistic knowledge acquisition is proposed, which combines corpus-based techniques with the conventional rule-based approach. The rule-based component generates all the possible hypotheses of defects which the existing linguistic knowledge might contain, when it fails to parse a sentence. The rule-based component does not try to identify the defects, but generates a set of hypotheses and the corpus-based component chooses the plausible ones among them.

  • This book is mainly intended for designers and users of magnetic components in power electronics. It can also be used for didactical purposes. Magnetic components such as inductors and transformers constitute together with the control and the semiconductor components, the main parts in the design of power electronic converters. Some experience teaches that the design of the magnetic parts is still often done by trial and error. This can be explained by a (too) long working-in time for designing inductors and transformers.

  • There is a vast multitude of materials with strongly differing properties. A copper wire, for instance, can be bent easily into a new shape, whereas a rubber band will snap back to its initial form after deformation, while the attempt to bend a glass tube ends with fracture of the tube. The strongly differing properties are reflected in the application of engineering materials – you would neither want to build cars of glass nor rubber bridges. The multitude of materials enables the engineer to select the best-suited one for any particular component.

  • Both small and large enterprise campuses require a highly available and secure, intelligent network infrastructure to support business solutions such as voice, video, wireless, and mission-critical data applications. To provide such a reliable network infrastructure, the overall system of components that make up the campus must minimize disruptions caused by component failures.

  • In a WDM network, a single component failure may lead to multiple failures in the logical topology. Protection switching schemes that adopt traditional edge-disjoint or node-disjoint path-selection algorithms may not be able to protect the active connections properly. In this paper, we generalize the disjoint path problem by providing a framework that can model arbitrary types of failures, so that a solution to the problem can be applied to protection switching in WDM networks.

  • Piezoelectric materials form the backbone of several components utilized in communication systems, defense systems, industrial automation, medical diagnostics, energy storage and harvesting, and information technology. In high performance piezoelectric applications the material of choice is based upon lead-based composition with Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT) being the base. Recently worldwide environmental considerations are demanding the elimination of lead-based materials from all the consumer items. This has created urgency for finding alternative to PZT.

  • A review of silicon properties is important to understanding silicon components, in particular modern components such as strained-silicon MOSFETs and heterojunction bipolar transistors. Several books cover this subject in detail. The objective of this chapter is to highlight those features that are most important to silicon device operation and characteristics.

  • Maintaining the Network into the design of a network, and no matter how reliable the individual components are, corrective action will always be required in some form or another, to prevent or make good network and component failures, and maintain overall service standards. However, attitudes towards maintenance and the organization behind it vary widely, ranging from the ‘let it fail then fix it’ school of thought right through to ‘prevent faults at any cost’

  • Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) harnesses the processing power of multiple, interconnected servers on a cluster; allows access to a single database from multiple servers on a cluster, insulating both applications and database users from server failures, while providing performance that scales out on-demand at low cost; and is a vital component of grid computing that allows multiple servers to access a single database at one time. Oracle Database 11g also includes Automated Storage Management (ASM) and Oracle Clusterware.

  • The regression results also imply that expected inflation has a substantial effect on expected long-run real equity returns. In other words, in addition to the negative effect on stock prices associated with its effect on expected earnings, higher expected inflation also raises long- run required returns. Roughly speaking, a one percentage point increase in expected inflation increases required long-run real stock returns about a percentage point; equivalently, it reduces the current price of stocks about 20 percent.

  • As the Internet continues to grow exponentially, the need for network engineers to build, maintain, and troubleshoot the growing number of component networks also has increased significantly. Because network troubleshooting is a practical skill that requires on-the-job experience, it has become critical that the learning curve necessary to gain expertise in internetworking technologies be reduced to quickly fill the void of skilled network engineers needed to support the fast-growing Internet.
