  • Composites are engineered or naturally occurring materials made from two or more constituent materials with significantly different physical or chemical properties which remain separate and distinct within the finished structure. Basically, they can be categorized into two major types, i.e., structural composites with outstanding mechanical properties and functional composites with various outstanding physical, chemical or electrochemical properties. They have been widely used in a wide variety of products, e.g.

  • We propose CMSMs, a novel type of generic compositional models for syntactic and semantic aspects of natural language, based on matrix multiplication. We argue for the structural and cognitive plausibility of this model and show that it is able to cover and combine various common compositional NLP approaches ranging from statistical word space models to symbolic grammar formalisms.

  • The automatic extraction of relations between entities expressed in natural language text is an important problem for IR and text understanding. In this paper we show how different kernels for parse trees can be combined to improve the relation extraction quality. On a public benchmark dataset the combination of a kernel for phrase grammar parse trees and for dependency parse trees outperforms all known tree kernel approaches alone suggesting that both types of trees contain complementary information for relation extraction. ...

  • The present paper proposes a method by which to translate outputs of a robust HPSG parser into semantic representations of Typed Dynamic Logic (TDL), a dynamic plural semantics defined in typed lambda calculus. With its higher-order representations of contexts, TDL analyzes and describes the inherently inter-sentential nature of quantification and anaphora in a strictly lexicalized and compositional manner. The present study shows that the proposed translation method successfully combines robustness and descriptive adequacy of contemporary semantics. ...

  • The form of rules in ¢ombinatory categorial grammars (CCG) is constrained by three principles, called "adjacency", "consistency" and "inheritance". These principles have been claimed elsewhere to constrain the combinatory rules of composition and type raising in such a way as to make certain linguistic universals concerning word order under coordination follow immediately.

  • Meat has long been a central component of the human diet, both as a food in its own right and as an essential ingredient in many other food products. Its importance has also attracted controversy. Meat consumption has, for example, been associated with chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease. These and other concerns, such as those over safety, have led to declining consumption of some types of red meat in regions such as the EU. As a result, the questions of what defines meat quality in the minds of consumers, and the ways these quality attributes can be maintained...

  • The first edition of 1884 contained but 5 pages of type; the second of 1898, 14 pages. Only by conciseness has it been possible to give even a summary of the principles of dietetics within the limit or this pamphlet. Should there appear in places an abruptness or incompleteness of treatment, these limitations must be my excuse. Those who wish to thoroughly study the science of food are referred to the standard work, "Food and Dietetics," by Dr. R. Hutchison (E. Arnold, 16s.). The effects of purin bodies in producing illness has been patiently and thoroughly worked out by Dr. Alexander Haig.

  • Genetically modified foods and food products derived from genetically engineered organisms are among a number of biotechnological developments intended to improve shelf life, nutritional content, flavor, color, and texture, as well as agronomic and processing characteristics. Although in popular parlance the term genetically modified often is used interchangeably with genetically engineered, in this report genetic modification refers to a range of methods used to alter the genetic composition of a plant or animal, including traditional hybridization and breeding.

  • Beer has been a popular beverage for thousands of years and brewing is often described as the oldest biotechnological process. Over the years the brewmaster’s art has been supplemented by vast increases in our knowledge of the chemistry and biochemistry both of the ingredients and of the changes taking place to those ingredients during brewing. Together these contribute to give the products we recognise today - a wide range of different but consistently high quality beer types.

  • Performance of a valve regulated lead/acid battery is affected by the properties of the positive grid corrosion layer. An investigation has been carried out using a range of experimental techniques to study the influence of corrosion layer composition and structure on cyclic performance. A number of designs of battery were manufactured with different grids and positive active materials (PAMs).

  • Currently there is uncertainty about the degree of difference in nutrient composition between conventionally and organically produced foodstuffs. Organic foodstuffs are those that are produced according to specified standards which, among other things, control the use of chemicals and medicines in crop and animal production, and emphasise protection of the environment. Recently published non-systematic reviews comparing nutrient composition of organically and conventionally produced foods have come to contrasting conclusions.

  • The objective of the first part of the questionnaire was to gather information on the relative importance of different types of forest goods and services in the EU Member States. The respondents were asked to rank the relative importance of forest goods and services (from 1 – not important; to 5 – very important), according to their own perceptions about the total benefits forest goods and services provide to the society. The aim of the second part (Part B) of the questionnaire was to produce an overview of financing mechanisms used in the EU-27. For this purpose, the respondents...

Suspected fraud or money laundering through insurance company products is primarily detected after the fact. Insurance companies may offer their products through a number of distribution channels in a number of states, however the processing unit and service center is generally centralized in one location.

  • Depending on the purpose of the classification, various factors and criteria are considered (e.g. example the ecosystem functions, the end-use of the product, type of users, economic value, property regimes, management characteristics, etc.). However, none of the classification schemes are universal, and all of them have advantages or disadvantages, depending on the context of their application. Bearing in mind the FORVALUE objectives and its main accent on the non-market forest goods and services, four classification approaches, were considered and are describe in more detail.

Continuous variables were transformed to normalize them. We also explored possible relationships between some variables and they were crossed by constructing contingency tables. We used the Student's t tests and chi square tests for the comparison of quantitative and categorical variables.

  • Therefore, the integration of the sensors in the furniture is one of the ways to implement an invisible ubiquitous computing environment. The second advantage is that for Ambient Assisted Living solutions, elderly people prefer not to be aware of the existence of the sensors, since this presence is understood as a reminder that they need this support, and it is highly important not to make these deployments highly impacting in people, in order to achieve a higher acceptance.

  • When a transmission violating your enforced security policies is detected by a Sensor, the Sensor compiles information about the offending transmission and sends this “attack” data to the Manager in the form of an alert. Alert details include transmission data such as, source and destination IP addresses in the packet, as well as security analysis information (performed by the Sensor) such as attack type and severity. Alerts are backed up to the database and archived in order of occurrence.
