  • The perspective of this book is that the steady - state separation model should also be the basis for developing the control confi guration for the column. Yes, a steady - state model! Although the technology to do so is widely available, extending to a dynamic model is not necessary for developing the column control confi guration. The most crucial component of every process control application is developing the piping and instrumentation (P & I) diagram that defi nes the control confi guration for the process and for each unit operation, such as distillation, within that process.

  • Automatic process control is concerned with maintaining process variables, temperatures, pressures, flows, compositions, and the like, at a desired operating value. As we shall see in the ensuing pages, processes are dynamic in nature. Changes are always occurring, and if actions are not taken, the important process variables— those related to safety, product quality, and production rates—will not achieve design conditions.

  • We present a new approach to learning a semantic parser (a system that maps natural language sentences into logical form). Unlike previous methods, it exploits an existing syntactic parser to produce disambiguated parse trees that drive the compositional semantic interpretation. The resulting system produces improved results on standard corpora on natural language interfaces for database querying and simulated robot control.

  • In another recent study by our group (Gürlek et al. 2009) similar salivary ICTP levels were detected in smoker, non-smoker and ex-smoker patient groups with similar clinical periodontal findings. Smoking status was confirmed by salivary cotinine analysis but there was no clinically healthy control group in that study and the number of teeth present, average probing depths and attachment levels were all similar in the three study groups. There were no significant differences in saliva ICTP concentrations between the smoker and non-smoker patient groups.

  • The increasing global demand for processed foods has led to a greater prominence of the food industry, its specific needs and processing challenges. Consequently, in recent times the role of the engineer in the food industry has gained considerable prominence. In contrast to other more traditional processing industries, the raw materials or ingredients that are used tend to be of greater complexity in nature.

  • This book pilots the reader into the future. The first three chapters introduce new materials and material processing methods. Then five chapters present innovative new design directions and solutions. The main section of the book contains ten chapters organized around problems and methods of manufacturing and technology, from cutting process optimisation through maintenance and control to the Digital Factory. The last two chapters deal with information and energy, as the foundations of a prospering economy....

  • Controlling the impact of stress on brewing biomass, predicting yeast activity and ensuring consistent fermentation performance through successive fermentations remain areas of active interest for the brewing industry. To be able to control and perhaps even manipulate yeast activity, it is necessary to identify factors that affect its functionality during fermentation. Genetic stability and integrity are crucial to maintaining predictable performance.

  • “There’s Plenty of Room at the Bottom” ⎯ this was the title of the lecture Prof. Richard Feynman delivered at California Institute of Technology on December 29, 1959 at the American Physical Society meeting. He considered the possibility to manipulate matter on an atomic scale. Indeed, the design and controllable synthesis of nanomaterials have attracted much attention because of their distinctive geometries and novel physical and chemical properties.

With this information and assumptions and boundary conditions for load distribution along with the characteristics, analysis of the beam line can then be carried out and the load factor assessment development (AASTHO, 1994).

  • First, the concentrated decision rights within the firms allow them to operate in greater secrecy. A politician may desire more secrecy in order to maintain a reputation of integrity. The firms also prefer operating in secret in order to discourage entry by competitors. Second, compared to a hired manager in a widely held firm, a controlling owner is more secure in his position in the firm and thus has more credibility on which to trade favors with the government.

  • Modern complex dynamical systems1 are highly interconnected and mutually interdependent, both physically and through a multitude of information and communication network constraints. The sheer size (i.e., dimensionality) and complexity of these large-scale dynamical systems often necessitates a hierarchical decentralized architecture for analyzing and controlling these systems. Specifically, in the analysis and control-system design of complex large-scale dynamical systems it is often desirable to treat the overall system as a collection of interconnected subsystems.

Together with the numerous individual sculptures that have emerged from Noguchi’s various studios throughout his long and distinguished career, the artist has been involved in major environ- mental projects, especially since the early 1950s.
