Since 1996, ASP programmers have faced one upgrade after another, often with no
extremely visible advantages until version 3.x—it’s been quite a wild ride. Now we
have the first significant improvement in ASP programming within our grasp—
ASP.NET.Our reliance on a watered-down version of Visual Basic has been alleviated
now that ASP.NET pages may be programmed in both Microsoft’s new and
more powerful version of Visual Basic or the latest version of C++: C#, which is
more Web friendly.ASP.NET allows programmers and developers to work with both
In this tutorial, you learn how to build model classes and perform database access by taking advantage of Microsoft LINQ to SQL In this tutorial, we build a basic Movie database application. We start by creating the Movie database application in the fastest and easiest way possible. We perform all of our data access directly from our controller actions. Next, you learn how to use the Repository pattern. Using the Repository pattern requires a little more work. However, the advantage of adopting this pattern is that it enables you to build applications that are adaptable to change and can...

XML and some of its related technologies, including XPath, XSL Transformation, and XML Schema, are unquestionably at the foundation of ADO.NET. As a matter of fact, XML constitutes the key element for the greatly improved interoperability of the ADO.NET object model when compared to ADO. In ADO, XML was merely an (nondefault) I/O format used to persist the content of a disconnected recordset. The participation of XML in the building and in the inter -workings of ADO.NET is much deeper. The aspects of ADO.NET where the interaction and the...
This is a practical guide for developers working with the Oracle Data Provider for .NET (ODP.NET) using VB.NET. From introducing ODP.NET and programming with ODP.NET to application development using ODP.NET and on to discussing Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio 2005, this book covers the important aspects of ODP.NET. The book is written for professional .NET developers who need to work with and take full advantage of Oracle Database 10g using Visual Studio 2005. Developers are expected to be familiar with Visual Basic.NET 2005 and have minimum knowledge of Oracle SQL and PL/SQL....
As a developer you are likely painfully aware that not all features of an application can be anticipated when the software ships. In order to cope with these eventualities and save yourself time (and perhaps money), it makes sense to write your applications in such a way that end users can be made as independent of the developers as possible. Giving your users the power to make changes to the way the application operates once it has shipped gives them more control over the way the application works, while reducing the frequency with which you need to redistribute application files,...

In early 2001 I began using Microsoft’s .NET Framework for a project I was working
on with a small startup company. Unfortunately, the winds changed and I found
myself with more free time than I would normally hope for. So when Manning Publications
asked me if I would contribute to a book on programming with the .NET
Framework, I welcomed the idea.
As events unfolded, I found myself with some fairly strong opinions about how
such a book should be organized, and offered up a proposal to write a solo book on
programming Windows Forms applications.

Most controls in .NET derive from the System.Windows.Forms.Control class
Many of these classes are themselves base classes for other controls, as is the case with the Label and TextBoxBase classes
