  • It was our great pleasure to welcome you to the 17th Annual International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2006), which was held for the first time in Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta), during December 18–20, 2006. This is the second ISAAC meeting organized in India; the first one was held in the city of Chennai in 1999. This symposium provided an excellent opportunity for sharing thoughts among the participants on the recent advances in algorithm design and their manifold applications to emerging areas.

  • This chapter deals with the most basic concepts in finance: future value, present value, and internal rate of return. These concepts tell you how much your money will grow if deposited in a bank (future value), how much promised future payments are worth today (present value), and what percentage rate of return you’re getting on your investments (internal rate of return).

  • The system we are considering needs to support communications for 109 devices. The users using these devices would be interested in peer-to-peer (P2P) style of communication, business- to-business (B2B) interactions or a be part of a system comprising of agents where discoveries are initiated for services from any of these devices. Finally, some of these devices could also be used as part of a computation. The devices are thus part of a complex distributed system. Communication in the system is through events, which are encapsulated within messages.

  • Since such a fund is determined according to a pre-ranking of all fund alphas, a correct inference about its alpha must take into account the entire cross-section of the fund alphas3. In this context, they advocate to use a bootstrap procedure, and conclude that they account for luck in the sense that they correctly compute the p-values of the individual funds4. This definition of luck is not related to the issue of multiple testing investigated in this paper.

  • Although the chapters included in this book are all addressing protein interactions, we try to separate them into two parts according to their objectives. Chapters in part 1 mainly focus on the investigation of some specific protein-protein or protein-nucleic acid interactions, and try to elucidate the mechanism of specific cellular processes. Part 1 provides some insight of why and how to study protein interactions, and illustrates some approaches to modulate protein interactions.

  • We envision a computer program that could offer effective critique to help indi- vidual students learn designing. However, our understanding of design critiquing as yet is too spotty or incomplete to realize this vision. Therefore, as a step in this direction we aim to develop a systematic framework to account for the decisions that a critic makes. We built the Furniture Design Critic system to develop a computational model of design critiquing.

  • The data described above allow us to calculate the number of years of a given student’s early childhood in which television sig- nals were available. In order to make the magnitudes we measure in the analysis below more easily interpretable, we will also use data on the rate at which television ownership actually diffused among households in each county. We will use the term televi- sion exposure to refer to the expected number of years a child’s household owned a television during the child’s preschool years.

  • It's an exciting time to be a competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC). With more carriers entering the market, customers know they have many options for service. In fact, shopping around for the most economical and best quality solution is becoming almost as basic for businesses as casual Fridays. For new competitors, the key to getting customers' attention is finding a cost-effective way to deliver and differentiate their services. The opportunity is clear when CLECs take a look at the exploding T1 service delivery market.

We answer this not analytically—our model with its fully heterogeneous expectations it is too complicated to admit of analytical solutions—but computationally.

Homegrown harvested and grazed feed costs were computed using market prices for each feed item to estimate the opportunity cost of feed fed to dairy cattle. State average market prices were used to value the harvested feed items fed to dairy cows on conventional dairies (USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service).

  • Volunteers Are a Valuable Financial Resource. A volunteer’s time is an important resource for many charities and congregations, especially those that do not have the money to hire labor to carry out certain tasks. Volunteer time is comparable to a monetary donation. Independent Sector, a national advocate for the nonprofit sector, computes annually an equivalent average hourly wage for a volunteer’s time. The calculation is derived from the average hourly wage of nonagricultural workers plus 12 percent for fringe benefits. By this calculation, the typical 2002 volunteer value was $16.
