  • The NS2 is a two reader panel providing access control for up to two doors through the use of Wiegand readers. The NS2 may be used as a standalone panel with independent card and transaction storage or, with a software upgrade, as a fully monitored online access control device. Communication to the front-end computer is achieved through an RS-232 serial cable (included with installation kit) or an optional RS-485 interface. Each RS-485 interface is capable of communicating with up to 31 panels. The NS2 is designed for tile mount using the ENC10 enclosure.

  • Limit network traffic to increase network performance. For example, if corporate policy does not allow video traffic on the network, ACLs that block video traffic could be configured and applied. This would greatly reduce the network load and increase network performance. 2. Provide traffic flow control. ACLs can restrict the delivery of routing updates. If updates are not required because of network conditions, bandwidth is preserved. 3. Provide a basic level of security for network access.

  • Aidan McDonald has just received a DSL line Internet connection to a local ISP in his home. The ISP has allocated only one IP address to be used on the serial port of his remote access device. Routing between the ISP and the home router is done using a static route between the ISP and the gateway routers, and a default route between the gateway and the ISP routers. The ISP connection to the Internet will be represented by a loopback address on the ISP router.

  • Two protocols support connection to the Internet via modem: SLIP (Serial Line Internet Protocol) and PPP (Point to Point Protocol). As the name suggests, SLIP supports only IP. It is an older, less rugged protocol. Its only advantage is that it may be available where PPP isn’t. If you have the choice, always take PPP: it differs from SLIP in being able to handle multiple protocols simultaneously, and it’s also used on many DSL links (PPP over Ethernet or PPPoE). In this chapter, we’ll look only at PPP....
