  • Scientific realism has been advanced as an interpretation of the natural sciences but never the behavioral sciences. This exciting book introduces a novel version of scientific realism--Measured Realism--that characterizes the kind of theoretical progress in the social and psychological sciences that is uneven but indisputable. Trout proposes a theory of measurement--Population-Guided Estimation--that connects natural, psychological, and social scientific inquiry.

  • This paper addresses two issues concerning lexical access in connected speech recognition: 1) the nature of the pre-lexical representation used to initiate lexical lookup 2) the points at which lexical look-up is triggered off this representation. The results of an experiment are reported which was designed to evaluate a number of access strategies proposed in the literature in conjunction with several plausible pre-lexical representations of the speech input.

  • The authors and contributors to this report acknowledge the Indigenous Traditional Owners of Country throughout Northern Australia, and their right to speak for Country. The authors are recipients of an ARC Linkage Grant focused on investigating connectivity conservation issues in various regions, including Northern Australia. Some of the outcomes from that research were drawn upon for this report.

  • it is widely reco~nlzed that the process of understandln~ natural language texts cannot be accomplished w i t h o u t accessin~ mundane Knowledge a b o u t the w o r l d [2, 4, 6, 7]. That is, in order to resolve ambiguities, form expectations, and make causal connections between events, we must make use of all sorts of episodic, stereotypic and factual knowledge. In this p a p e r , we are concerned with the way functional knowledge of objects, and associations between objects can be exploited in an understandln~ system. ...

  • The EPISTLE system is being developed in a research project for exploring the feasibility of a variety of intelligent applications for the processing of business and office text (!'Z; the authors of are the project workers). Although ultimately intended functions include text generation (e.g., 4), present efforts focus on text analysis: developing the capability to take in essentially unconstrained business text and to output grammar and style critiques, on a sentence by sentence basis.

  • We examine the role of temporal connectives in multi-sentence discourse. In certain contexts, sentences containing temporal connectives that are equivalent in temporai structure can fail to be equivalent in terms of discourse coherence. We account for this by offering a novel, formal mechanism for accommodating the presuppositions in temporal subordinate clauses. This mechanism encompasses both accommodation by discourse aftachme,f and accommodation by temporal addition.

  • The biological changes underlying the transition process from gingival health to early inflammatory changes involve local increase in vascular permeability, edema and the recruitment and activation of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) (Delima and Van Dyke 2003). Acquired immune response becomes involved once antigen-presenting cells interact with immunocompetent cells, such as T and B lymphocytes, leading to the expansion of antibody-secreting plasma cells and the development of the chronic lesion (Gemmell and Seymour 2004).

  • We normally think of the eye as an organ for vision, but due to the discovery of additional nerve connections from recently-detected novel photoreceptor cells in the eye to the brain, it is now understood how light also mediates and controls a large number of biochemical processes in the human body. The most important findings are related to the control of the biological clock and to the regulation of some important hormones through regular light-dark rhythms. This in turn means that lighting has a large influence on health, well-being and alertness.

  • As rates of deforestation and land degradation, and losses of biodiversity and ecosystem services, continue to rise globally, the international community is faced with the challenge of finding land use interventions that can mitigate or reduce the impact of these environmental issues. Agroforestry, the integration of trees in farming systems, has the potential for providing rural livelihoods and habitats for species outside formally protected lands, connecting nature reserves, and alleviating resourceuse pressure on conservation areas.

  • In essays with settings that range from the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming, to the mountain town of Leadville, Colorado, to the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, Trudy Dittmar weaves personal experience with diverse threads of subject matter to create unexpected connections between human nature and nature at large. Life stories, elegantly combined with mindful observations of animals, plants, landscape and the skies, theories in natural science, environmental considerations, and touches of art criticism and popular culture, offer insights into the linked analogies of nature and soul....

  • We verify an old conjecture of G. P´lya and G. Szeg˝ saying that the o o regular n-gon minimizes the logarithmic capacity among all n-gons with a fixed area. 1. Introduction The logarithmic capacity cap E of a compact set E in R2 , which we identify with the complex plane C, is defined by (1.1) − log cap E = lim (g(z, ∞) − log |z|), z→∞ where g(z, ∞) denotes the Green function of a connected component Ω(E) ∞ of C \ E having singularity at z = ∞; see [4, Ch. 7], [7, §11.1]. By an n-gon with...

  • Our goal in writing this book was to describe why weeds occur where they do. We have made no attempt to discuss their management and control: there are excellent texts available for that. Rather, we think that students should understand how and why weeds fit into their environment. This text presents ecological principles as they relate to weeds. Ecology is central to our understanding of how and why weeds invade and yet there are few books that make this connection. That is the niche we hope to fill.

  • We establish an exact relation between self-avoiding branched polymers in D + 2 continuum dimensions and the hard-core continuum gas at negative activity in D dimensions. We review conjectures and results on critical exponents for D + 2 = 2, 3, 4 and show that they are corollaries of our result. We explain the connection (first proposed by Parisi and Sourlas) between branched polymers in D + 2 dimensions and the Yang-Lee edge singularity in D dimensions.

  • We investigate the relationship between an open simply-connected region Ω ⊂ S2 and the boundary Y of the hyperbolic convex hull in H3 of S2 \ Ω. A counterexample is given to Thurston’s conjecture that these spaces are related by a 2-quasiconformal homeomorphism which extends to the identity map on their common boundary, in the case when the homeomorphism is required to respect any group of M¨bius transformations which preserves Ω.

  • In the symplectic category there is a ‘connect sum’ operation that glues symplectic manifolds by identifying neighborhoods of embedded codimension two submanifolds. This paper establishes a formula for the Gromov-Witten invariants of a symplectic sum Z = X#Y in terms of the relative GW invariants of X and Y . Several applications to enumerative geometry are given. Gromov-Witten invariants are counts of holomorphic maps into symplectic manifolds.

  • This paper is the fourth in a series where we describe the space of all embedded minimal surfaces of fixed genus in a fixed (but arbitrary) closed 3manifold. The key is to understand the structure of an embedded minimal disk in a ball in R3 . This was undertaken in [CM3], [CM4] and the global version of it will be completed here; see the discussion around Figure 12 for the local case and [CM15] for some more details. Our main results are Theorem 0.1 (the lamination theorem) and Theorem 0.2 (the one-sided curvature estimate). ...

  • SLEκ is a random growth process based on Loewner’s equation with driving parameter a one-dimensional Brownian motion running with speed κ. This process is intimately connected with scaling limits of percolation clusters and with the outer boundary of Brownian motion, and is conjectured to correspond to scaling limits of several other discrete processes in two dimensions. The present paper attempts a first systematic study of SLE. It is proved that for all κ = 8 the SLE trace is a path; for κ ∈ [0, 4] it is a simple path; for κ ∈ (4, 8) it is...
