  • had great diffi culty fi nding a title for this book. For long, the working title was Genetic Variation and Extinction. However, this title implies a causal and simple relationship between genetic variation and extinction. I do think that the study of genetic variation is extremely important for conservation biology but, as will become apparent while reading the text, I am not as sure that this relationship is as simple and straightforward as I thought when I began this voyage.

  • Focusing on the rich biodiversity of Costa Rica, the contributors demonstrate the use of geographic information systems (GIS) to enhance conservation efforts. They give an overview of the spatial nature of conservation and management and the current status of digital mapping in Costa Rica; a review of the basic principles behind digital mapping technologies; a series of case studies using these technologies at a variety of scales and for a range of conservation and management activities; and the results of the Costa Rican gap analysis project....

  • Molecular biology is the study of biology at a molecular level.[35] This field overlaps with other areas of biology, particularly with genetics and biochemistry. Molecular biology chiefly concerns itself with understanding the interactions between the various systems of a cell, including the interrelationship of DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis and learning how these interactions are regulated.

  • Few issues display more clearly the competition between China’s drive to become economically developed and to conserve biodiversity than hydropower development. This is the subject of China’s most recent environmental controversy. In August 2003, the National Development and Reform Commission, a powerful economics super-ministry, authorized construction of a 13-station dam along the Nu1 River (Nujiang) in Yunnan Province. After at least a decade of construction, the dam would become the world’s largest.

  • Many Modern Ecological problems such as rain forest destruction, decreasing marine harvests, and fire suppression are directly or indirectly anthropogenic. Zooarchaeology and Conservation Biology presents an argument that conservation biology and wildlife management cannot afford to ignore zooarchaeological research--the identification and analysis of faunal remains recovered from archaeological deposits. The editors contend that we can learn important lessons by studying long-term human and nonhuman influences on biota and ecosystems.

  • The concept of 'biotech' or 'biotechnology' encompasses a wide range of procedures (and history) for modifying living organisms according to human purposes — going back to domestication of animals, cultivation of plants, and "improvements" to these through breeding programs that employ artificial selection and hybridization. Modern usage also includes genetic engineering as well as cell and tissue culture technologies.

  • Biotechnology (sometimes shortened to "biotech") is generally accepted as the use of living systems and organisms to develop or make useful products, or "any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use" (UN Convention on Biological Diversity)[1] . For thousands of years, humankind has used biotechnology in agriculture, food production and medicine.[2] The term itself is largely believed to have been coined in 1919 by Hungarian engineer Karl Ereky.

  • This book follows in the footsteps of two previous efforts—Snakes: Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (1987) and Snakes: Ecology and Behavior (1993)—to provide established and new researchers with a current synopsis of snake ecology. In the preface to each of these earlier works, one of us (R. A. S.) admitted that he had erred in assuming that another “Biology of the Serpentes” book was not worth tackling. And after the fi rst two books, we thought that perhaps yet another book was not needed—we were wrong again.

  • Basically, all conservation consists of actions taken to prevent decay, and within this objective it also includes management of change and presentation of the object so that the objects’ messages are made comprehensible without distortion. Architectural conservation is more complex; first because a building must continue to stand up; secondly, economic factors usually dictate that it should remain in use; thirdly, it has to resist and use the effects of climate; and, lastly, a whole team of ‘professionals’ have to collaborate.

  • The urgent need to ensure the conservation of biological diversity is now widely recognised, but the role of an intellectual property rights regime as an instrument for biodiversity conservation is poorly understood and often hotly debated. This volume is a detailed analysis of the economic and scientific rationales for the use of a property rights-based approach to biodiversity conservation. It discusses the justification for, and implemen- tation of, intellectual property rights regimes as incentive systems to encourage conservation.

  • Developmental biology studies the process by which organisms grow and develop. Originating in embryology, modern developmental biology studies the genetic control of cell growth, differentiation, and "morphogenesis," which is the process that progressively gives rise to tissues, organs, and anatomy. Model organisms for developmental biology include the round worm Caenorhabditis elegans,[39] the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster,[40] the zebrafish Danio rerio,[41] the mouse Mus musculus,,[42] and the weed Arabidopsis thaliana.

  • Conserving biodiversity is a daunting and complex task. Perhaps no species presents a greater challenge than the giant panda – one of the most recognized and threatened animals on the planet. Its difficult-to-traverse, mountainous habitat in China makes quantifying population numbers in the wild exceedingly difficult. Despite a recent survey suggesting that the wild population may be growing, there is no disagreement that the primary threat is severely fragmented habitat.

  • Previously published in hardback and now made available in paperback, this ground-breaking book is a must for all interested in butterflies, whether as conservation biologist, amateur or professional entomologist or as a student studying the phenomenon of butterfly populations as part of a number of biology, ecology or conservation courses. Recently, many British butterflies have suffered severe declines whole others have flourished and expanded in range. This is the first book to describe the results from a British scheme to monitor butterflies during this period of change.

  • Conservation of microRNAs (miRNAs) among species suggests that they bear conserved biological functions. However, sequencing of new miRNAs has not always been accompanied by a search for orthologues in other spe-cies. I report herein the results of a systematic search for interspecies ortho-logues of miRNA precursors, leading to the identification of 35 human and 45 mouse new putative miRNA genes. MicroRNA tracks were written to visualize miRNAs in human and mouse genomes on the UCSC Genome Browser....

  • Some say that ‘the cockroach’ will be the last species on Earth to survive. Then it has been calculated that one gravid aphid, left to reproduce with zero mortality, will, after one year, cover the globe with an aphid layer over 140 km thick. Not forgetting too, that flies and fleas vector disease. So, why should we even consider conserving insects? Quite simply, without insects, the likelihood is that the world as we know it would be radically changed in a matter of days. Besides, it is only a tiny minority of insects that harm our lives.
