  • The concept of marine reserves has been repeatedly addressed in the past 25 years, but implementation and subsequent evaluation of these protected areas has been relatively infrequent until the past decade. In recent years, there has been strong advocacy for reserves among the conservation community and those concerned about losses of habitat and biodiversity in the sea.

  • This book is about the distribution and abundance of different types of organism, and about the physical, chemical but especially the biological features and interactions that determine these distributions and abundances. Unlike some other sciences, the subject matter of ecology is apparent to everybody: most people have observed and pondered nature, and in this sense most people are ecologists of sorts. But ecology is not an easy science.

  • Engineering is the goal-oriented process of designing and making tools and systems to exploit natural phenomena for practical human means, often (but not always) using results and techniques from science. The development of technology may draw upon many fields of knowledge, including scientific, engineering, mathematical, linguistic, and historical knowledge, to achieve some practical result.

  • The word technology refers to the making, modification, usage, and knowledge of tools, machines, techniques, crafts, systems, and methods of organization, in order to solve a problem, improve a preexisting solution to a problem, achieve a goal, handle an applied input/output relation or perform a specific function. It can also refer to the collection of such tools, including machinery, modifications, arrangements and procedures. Technologies significantly affect human as well as other animal species' ability to control and adapt to their natural environments.

  • A challenging issue for boards can be finding directors who reflect the diversity of the community in which the organization operates. Boards benefit from having members with a variety of experiences and outlooks. They may encounter problems, however, if individual directors see themselves only as representatives of specific communities or interest groups. Representation that gives rise to the formation of camps or factions on the board can be a barrier to effective goal-setting and decision-making.

  • The goal of our research is to develop an autonomous robot for subsurface mapping. We are motivated by the growing need for mapping buried pipes, hazardous waste, landmines and other buried objects. Most of these are large scale mapping problems, and to manually construct subsurface maps in these cases would require a significant amount of resources. Therefore, automating the subsurface mapping process is an important factor in alleviating these problems. To achieve our goal, we have developed a robotic system that can autonomously gather and process Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) data.

  • Abstract This paper presents an implemented approach to part-mating of three-dimensional non-cylindrical parts with a 6 DOF manipulator, considering uncertainties in modeling, sensing and control. The core of the proposed solution is a reinforcement learning algorithm for selecting the actions that achieve the goal in the minimum number of steps. Position and force sensor values are encoded in the state of the system by means of a neural network. Experimental results are presented for the insertion of different parts – circular, quadrangular and triangular prisms – in three dimensions.

  • In January 2000, the Japanese Government's Environment Agency announced an amendment to Japan's Law for the Conservation of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, strengthening restrictions on domestic trade in tiger parts and derivatives. Japan is a significant consumer of Asian medicines and products, and up until this law was passed, products had been on open sale and unregulated. This law closes that possibility. In addition, all species threatened by the medic- inals trade are protected by national legislation in their range States.

  • The World Bank’s mission is to alleviate poverty and support sustainable development. The conservation and sustainable use of natural habitats and biodiversity will contribute to these goals by protecting ecosystem services that are critical to fulfilling these objectives. Biodiversity is the foundation and mainstay of agriculture, forests, and fisheries. Biological resources provide the raw materials for livelihoods, sustenance, medicines, trade, tourism, and industry.

  • This book is about change in the management of public services – how much of it and what consequences. For over two decades the goal of restructuring welfare provision has been at the heart of UK government policy. Under the Conservatives the focus was on controlling expenditure and re-organising services to make professionals more accountable for resource decisions. In health, education and social care, the objective was to install a system of managed provision heavily influenced by the practices of private firms.

  • AMBER is a model of first language acquisition that improves its performance through a process of error recovery. The model is implemented as an adaptive production system that introduces new condition-action rules on the basis of experience. AMBER starts with the ability to say only one word at a time, but adds rules for ordering goals and producing grammatical morphemes, based on comparisons between predicted and observed sentences.

  • Vietnam’s coastal zones are some of the very overexploited in the world with consequent degradation of its ecosystems and damage to public welfare. In general, the main goal of ICZM is to balance development and conservation, to ensure multi-sectoral planning and involve wide participation and conflict mediation. In the case of Vietnam, the central action will be adequate planning for development and management, whereby the development and management plans must be synchronous, efficacious by dealing with each other.
