  • Liquid fuel consumption by medium- and heavy-duty vehicles (MHDVs) represents 26 percent of all U.S. liquid transportation fuels consumed and has increased more rapidly—in both absolute and percentage terms—than consumption by other sectors. In early recognition of these trends, which are forecast to continue until 2035 (DOE, EIA, 2009), the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA; Public Law 110-140, Dec. 19, 2007), Section 108, was passed, requiring the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), for the first time in history, to establish fuel economy standards for MHDVs.

  • If the 20th century could be characterized by the rapid increase in the production and consumption of materials that helped improving the standards of living, then the 21st certainly has many elements to qualify as the century of recycling. Since the duration of life of a number of wastes is very small (roughly 40% have duration of life smaller than one month), there is a vast waste stream that reaches each year to the final recipients creating a serious environmental problem.

This situation is aggravated as industrial, agricultural and municipal effl uents reach the water bodies, or the coastal seawater that is used as feed for desalination plants.

  • Although MECS data report that coal supplied only 10 percent of the pulp and paper industry’s energy requirements in 2002, NEI data show coal as contributing to 43 percent of the sector’s energy-related CAP emissions. As MECS reports more than 50 percent of the sector’s energy coming from “other” fuels (which includes biomass), NEI data show that biomass (wood waste) is a less emissions-intensive energy source than coal. For wood products, combustion of wood/bark waste is the dominant energy-related source of CAP emissions.

Piggy Bank does not degrade the user’s experience of the Web, but it can improve their experience on RDF-enabled web sites. As a consequence, we expect that more web sites will see value in publishing RDF as more users adopt Piggy Bank. On sites that do not publish RDF, Piggy Bank can invoke screenscrapers to re-structure information within their web pages into RDF.

To illustrate the magnitude of potential impacts, two alternative scenarios are outlined for long- term US public transportation investment; a “base case” scenario that maintains long-term public transportation ridership trends, and a “higher transit investment” scenario that adds investment each year over the 2010-2030 period. The analysis estimates how travel times and costs, including effects of changes in congestion levels and mode switching, differs among the scenarios.
