  • Mathematical Finance is themathematical theory of financialmarkets. It tries to develop theoretical models, that can be used by “practitioners” to evaluate certain data from “real” financial markets. A model cannot be “right” or wrong, it can only be good or bad ( for practical use ). Even “bad” models can be “good” for theoretical insight.

  • Business process reengineering is the most popular business concept of the 1990’s. Celebrated in best-selling books (in the U.S., Japan, Brazil, and many countries in Europe), articles in every major business publication, conferences, and even several videotapes, reengineering has penetrated into every continent except Antarctica. Thousands of companies and public sector organizations have initiated reengineering initiatives. Internal and external consultants on the topic have proliferated dramatically. Many universities have created courses on the topic for business school students....

  • Non-market valuation has become a broadly accepted and widely practiced means of measuring the economic values of the environment and natural resources. In this book, the authors provide a guide to the statistical and econometric practices that economists employ in estimating non-market values. The authors develop the econometric models that underlie the basic methods: contingent valuation, travel cost models, random utility models and hedonic models.

  • In some countries, adolescents are less likely than adults to obtain skilled care before, during and after childbirth. 8,9 WHO’s recommendations for increasing the use of skilled antenatal, childbirth and postpartum care are informed by one graded study, one ungraded study, existing WHO guidelines and the collective experience and judgment of a panel of experts. The studies were conducted in Chile and India. One intervention was a home visit programme for adolescent mothers. Another was a cash transfer scheme contingent upon health facility births.

  • Messaging systems based on queuing include products such as Microsoft’s MSMQ [28]and IBM’s MQSeries [29]. The queuing model with their store-and-forward mechanisms come into play where the sender of the message expects someone to handle the message while imposing asynchronous communication and guaranteed delivery constraints. A widely used standard in messaging is the Message Passing Interface Standard (MPI) [21]. MPI is designed for high performance on both massively parallel machines and workstation clusters.

  • In this paper we develop a contingent valuation model for zero-coupon bonds with de- fault. In order to emphasize the role of maturity time and place of the lender’s claim in the hierarchy of debt of a Þrm, we consider a Þrm that issues two bonds with different ma- turities and different seniorage. The model allows us to analyze the implications of both debt renegotiation and capital structure of a Þrm on the prices of bonds.

  • Continuous-time modeling in finance, though introduced by Louis Bachelier's 1900 thesis on the theory of speculation, really started with Merton's seminal work in the 1970s. Since then, the continuous-time paradigm has proved to be an immensely useful tool in finance and more generally economics. Continuous-time models are widely used to study issues that include the decision to optimally consume, save, and invest, portfolio choice under a variety of constraints, contingent claim pricing, capital accumulation, resource extraction, game theory, and more recently contract theory....

This assumption can be justi ed for internet shopping or the cases when as Stahl, II (1989) puts it \Casual empiricism suggests that there is a non-negligible measure of consumers who seem to derive enjoyment from shopping itself".

  • Looking at a recent Cairns Group proposal on domestic support it can be seen that they want to strengthen the Green Box provision dealing with direct payments (including structural adjustment, environment and regional assistance) while capping overall spending on direct payments under the Green Box. As well, they hope to subject certain support sub-categories in the Box to reduction commitments. The Cairns Group paper further proposes to strengthen transparency, notification and review mechanisms to ensure programs meet the criteria set out in the Green Box.

  • Extent of knowledge sharing: Related to the above problem is the question of how much knowledge is available to the system during its query optimization process. In particular, the first step in choosing a query evaluation strategy is likely to be identifying which nodes have materialized views that can speed query processing. A simple technique would be to use a centralized catalog of all available views and their locations, analogous to the central directory used by Napster. Yet this model introduces a single point of failure and a potential scalability bottleneck.

Return statistics from 1987 through 2005 suggest that fundamentally- weighted indexes have outperformed capitalization-weighted indexes in Greece, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Germany and Denmark by over 200 basis points per annum. In Japan the out performance has been greater than 300 basis points a year. In emerging markets, the technique has shown even greater excess returns over capitalization- weighted indexes.
