AN ASYMPTOTIC RESULT FOR SOME DELAY DIFFERENCE EQUATIONS WITH CONTINUOUS VARIABLE CH. G. PHILOS AND I. K. PURNARAS Received 14 October 2003 We consider a nonhomogeneous linear delay difference equation with continuous variable and establish an asymptotic result for the solutions. Our result is obtained by the use of a positive root with an appropriate property of the socalled characteristic equation of the corresponding homogeneous linear (autonomous) delay difference equation.

The quantitative independent variables used in regression equations, which usually take values over some continuous range. Frequently, one may wish to include the quality independent variables, often called dummy variables, in the regression model in order to (i) capture the presence or absence of a ‘quality’, such as male or female, poor or rich, urban or rural areas, college degree or do not college degree, different stages of development, different period of time; (ii) to capture the interaction between them; and, (iii) or to take on one or more distinct values. ...

This chapter is of an introductory nature, its purpose being to indicate some concepts and results from the theory of probability which are used in later chapters . Most of these are contained in Chapters 19 of Gnedenko [47], and will therefore be cited without proof. The first section is somewhat isolated, and contains a series of results from the foundations of the theory of probability. A detailed account may be found in [76], or in Chapter I of [31] . Some of these will not be needed in the first part of the book, in which attention is confined to independent random variables ....

We should now develop some intuition before we take up the rigorous development in the next section. The elements ω ∈ Ω are the possible states of nature and one among them, say δ, is the true state of nature. The true state of nature is unknown and controls the outcome of all random experiments. An event A ∈ F occurs or does not occur according as δ ∈ A or δ ∈ A, that is, according as the random variable 1A assumes the value one or zero at δ. To gain information about the true state of nature we determine by means of experiments whether...

In this volume I present some examples of Basic Concepts, Examination of Functions, Level Curves and Level Surfaces and Description of Curves, cf. also Calculus 2b, Functions of Several Variables. Since my aim also has been to demonstrate some solution strategy I have as far as possible structured the examples according to the following form A Awareness, i.e. a short description of what is the problem. D Decision, i.e. a reflection over what should be done with the problem. I Implementation, i.e. where all the calculations are made. C Control, i.e. a test of the result.

This quotation serves as the guiding rationale for this book and, I hope, provides an outlook for teaching and learning about statistics. From the main content to the ped agogical aids and endofthechapter exercises, this textbook fosters learning and dis covery. As students learn how to perform calculations and interpret the results, they will discover new ways to think about the world around them, uncover previously unrec ognized relationships among disparate variables, and make better judgments about how and why people behave the way they do. ...

Variable stars are those that change brightness. Their variability may be due to geometric processes such as rotation, or eclipse by a companion star, or physical processes such as vibration, flares, or cataclysmic explosions. In each case, variable stars provide unique information about the properties of stars, and the processes that go on within them.

Chapter 1 What is statistics? When you have completed this chapter, you will be able to: Understand why we study statistics, explain what is meant by descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, distinguish between a qualitative variable and a quantitative variable, describe how a discrete variable is different from a continuous variable, distinguish among the nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio levels of measurement.

The Joomla! team was organized and has built a solid foundation; it has continued developing Joomla! 1.0.0 to version 1.0.12, and now has the largest developmental leap so far to Joomla! 1.5 in sight. The users of the system have had just as exciting a year. Many have upgraded their site to Joomla! and a lot of new users have discovered Joomla!, but there are still a lot who don't know the system. Joomla! is by far the most used opensource Web Content Management System in the world.

Automatic process control is concerned with maintaining process variables, temperatures, pressures, flows, compositions, and the like, at a desired operating value. As we shall see in the ensuing pages, processes are dynamic in nature. Changes are always occurring, and if actions are not taken, the important process variables— those related to safety, product quality, and production rates—will not achieve design conditions.

With the ever increasing amounts of data in electronic form, the need for automated methods for data analysis continues to grow. The goal of machine learning is to develop methods that can automatically detect patterns in data, and then to use the uncovered patterns to predict future data or other outcomes of interest. Machine learning is thus closely related to the fields of statistics and data mining, but differs slightly in terms of its emphasis and terminology.

The development of quantum mechanics has taken physics in a vastly new direction from that of classical physics from the very start. In fact, there continue at present to be many developments in the subject of a very fundamental nature, such as implications for the foundations of physics, physics of entanglement, geometric phases, gravity and cosmology and elementary particles as well. It is hoped the papers in this volume will provide a much needed resource for researchers with regard to current topics of research in this growing area....

Descriptive statistics were used for demographic variables, expressed as mean and standard deviation in the case of continuous variables with a normal distribution. In case of an asymmetrical distribution the median and interquartile (IQ) values were used. Noncontiguous variables were presented as frequencies. The ShapiroWilk test was used to determine a normal distribution.
