  • Before working on consumption, WWF looked at the existing advice about food choices. We saw that this was already a very crowded area and we didn’t want to add to the maelstrom of information. We had already noticed that the environmental ’hotspots’ had much in common with the health ones. In an attempt to bring some of these messages together, we decided to look at current governmental eating advice – the Eatwell plate – and to see how it could be adapted to include the environment. The idea was to produce a definition of a sustainable diet that is nutritionally...

  • We study weekly portfolio returns from 23 developed markets. We choose to study returns at a weekly frequency to avoid the problems caused by nonsyn- chronous trading around the world at higher frequencies. All returns are U.S. dollar denominated, and we calculate excess returns by subtracting the U.S. weekly T-bill rate, which is obtained from the Center for Research in Security Prices (CRSP) riskfree file. 1 Our selection of developed countries matches the countries currently in the Morgan Stanley Developed Country Index. Data for the United States are from Compustat and CRSP.

  • Certain paints emit chemicals Credit: Daniel Case Several household consumer products emit chemicals into air , for instance cleaning products, floor care products, furniture and household fabrics, air fresheners, glues, paints, paint strippers, personal care products, printed matter , electronic equipment, candles and incense. Some studies show a link between the use of consumer products and adverse health effects. However , it is not clear to what extent pollutants are responsible for the observed effects because other factors may also contribute to them.

  • Cambodia’s child mortality ranks among the highest in Southeast Asia with an un- der five mortality rate at 83 per 1,000 live births (Cambodia Demographic and Health Survey (CDHS), 2005). Limited access to safe water and poor hygiene contribute to child morbidity and mortality—only 53% of rural families have access to safe drinking water (National Report on Final Census Re- sults, 2008). Diarrhea is responsible for 17% of deaths of children under the age of five (WHO, 2006).

This new entity should utilize lessons from this successful sharing of specific and actionable classified information.

  • Answering the question of why Brazil has relatively high real interest rates cannot be done in isolation by focusing exclusively on Brazilian data. Doing so would lead us to conclude that Brazilian real interest rates are actually very low at the moment. We are interested not only in why interest rates have declined but why, at any point in time, they were considerably higher than in other countries and what factors may help Brazil converge to the level of other emerging markets. To this end, the analysis in this paper is based on a panel data set of 15 emerging...

  • Declining water quality is an acute problem around the world, particularly in developing countries where there are notable increases in agricultural and industrial production, coupled with a lack of adequate wastewater treatment. In many developing countries, waterways traditionally used for drinking water or other community needs have been heavily contaminated. In China, many rivers are so badly polluted that not even industry can use the water and nearly two-thirds of the country’s largest cities have no wastewater treatment facilities.

  • Most Volunteer Managers Have at Least a Minimum Level of Training. If organizations reported that they have a paid staff member who dedicates time to managing volunteers, we asked if this person has any formal training in volunteer administration, such as coursework, workshops, or attendance at conferences that focus on volunteer management. We learned that paid staff volunteer coordinators in 66 percent of charities and 72 percent of congregational social service outreach activities pass this minimum threshold for training in volunteer administration.

  • They found that for the US and Canada this reaction can be accounted for entirely by the impact of the oil shocks on cash-flows. The results for Japan and the UK were inconclusive. Using an unrestricted vector autoregressive (VAR), Huang et al. (1996) show a significant link between some American oil company stock returns and oil price changes. However, they find no evidence of a relationship between oil prices and market indices such as the S&P500.

  • We present an array of force spectroscopy experiments that aim to identify the role of solvent hydrogen bonds in protein folding and chemical reactions at the single-molecule level. In our experiments we control the strength of hydrogen bonds in the solvent environment by substituting water (H2O) with deuterium oxide (D2O). Using a combination of force protocols, we demonstrate that protein unfolding, protein collapse, protein folding and a chemical reaction are affected in different ways by substituting H2O with D2O.

  • Although it has been shown that frozen storage is feasible for some of the tissue-engineered products such as bone (Kofron et al., 2003), it is more difficult than that for isolated cells and requires special considerations. Water transport processes may cause difficulties for tissue-scale freezing. While cells at the surface layer would respond to freeze-induced osmotic changes much like cells in suspension, interior cells would dehydrate as a response to the increased intracellular tonicity in the dehydrate surface layers.
