  • This book reports initial efforts in providing some useful extensions in financial modeling; further work is necessary to complete the research agenda. The demonstrated extensions in this book in the computation and modeling of optimal control in finance have shown the need and potential for further areas of study in financial modeling. Potentials are in both the mathematical structure and computational aspects of dynamic optimization. There are needs for more organized and coordinated computational approaches.

  • The phase locked loop is a feedback system comprised of a phase comparator, a low pass filter and error amplifier in the forward signal path and a voltage-controlled oscillator (VC0) in the feedback path. The block diagram of a basic PLL system is shown. Perhaps the single most important point to realize when designing with the PLL is that it is a feedback system and, hence, is characterized mathematically by the same questions that apply to other, more conventional feedback systems.

  • OSCILLATOR DESIGN Oscillator circuits are used for generating the periodic signals that are needed in various applications. These circuits convert a part of dc power into the periodic output and do not require a periodic signal as input. This chapter begins with the basic principle of sinusoidal oscillator circuits. Several transistor circuits are subsequently analyzed in order to establish their design procedures.

  • In the latest years much research effort was devoted to envision a new paradigm for wireless transmission. Results from recent works (Wireless Word Research Forum, 2005) indicate that a possible solution would lie in utilizing in a more efficient manner the diverse Radio Access Technologies1 (RATs) that are available nowadays, with the purpose of enabling interoperability among them and convergence into one global telecom infrastructure (beyond 3G).

  • Vibration training and vibration therapy, also known as whole body vibration (WBV), biomechanical stimulation (BMS), and biomechanical oscillation (BMO) date back to ancient Greece. Recently, vibration training has been reinvented as a new form of exercise that is becoming more frequently used to improve muscle strength, power and flexibility as well as coordination. Increasingly, WBV can be encountered in different wellness, fitness and rehabilitation centres as well as medical centres.

  • Tendons are known to have a profound impact on the overall function of the musculoskeletal system in their role as a structural link and force transmitter between muscle and bone. Their unique viscoelastic response under tension allows efficient use and recycling of stored energy during stretch involved in locomotion, modulating joint position control, and providing protection from muscle injuries through reduction of mechanical oscillation and shock.

  • FUZZY MODELING AND CONTROL OF CHAOTIC SYSTEMS Chaotic behavior is a seemingly random behavior of a deterministic system that is characterized by sensitive dependence on initial conditions. Chaotic behavior of a physical system can either be desirable or undesirable, depending on the application. It can be beneficial in many circumstances, such as enhanced mixing of chemical reactants. Chaos can, on the other hand, entail large-amplitude motions and oscillations that might lead to system failure....

  • Sophisticated engines could not even happen until Maxwell’s use of dif- ferential equations in order to stop the engines of that time from flying apart, stopping, or oscillating wildly, so the mathematics here starts with advanced calculus. Today’s engines are far more sophisticated. Their designs require the solutions of complex non-linear partial differential equations and very advanced work with linear algebra. Today a major focus is on autonomous machines, machines that can do routine and even non-routine tasks without human control.
