  • In late 1995, the Java programming language burst onto the Internet scene and gained instant celebrity status. The promise of Java technology was that it would become the universal glue that connects users with information wherever it comes from—web servers, databases, information providers, or any other imaginable source. Indeed, Java is in a unique position to fulfill this promise.

  • This paper describes an algorithm for computing optimal structural descriptions for Optimality Theory grammars with context-free position structures. This algorithm extends Tesar's dynamic programming approach (Tesar, 1994) (Tesar, 1995@ to computing optimal structural descriptions from regular to context-free structures. The generalization to contextfree structures creates several complications, all of which are overcome without compromising the core dynamic programming approach.

  • Grid research, rooted in distributed and high performance computing, started in midto- late 1990s when scientists around the world acknowledged the need to establish an infrastructure to support their collaborative research on compute and data intensive experiments. Soon afterwards, national and international research and development authorities realized the importance of the Grid and gave it a primary position on their research and development agenda.

  • The fear of pain after surgery is a common concern for a woman and her partner. After surgery there may still be pain and discomfort, in addition to fatigue that can interfere with sexual pleasure. Finding a comfortable position to reduce discomfort is important. Some recommendations are positioning the woman on top or in a side-lying position to control depth of penetration, and decrease abdominal discomfort at the incision site. Placing pillows under the knees or behind the small of the back may increase comfort.

  • To detect funds with positive or negative performance, the standard approach in the academic literature (e.g., Jensen (1968), Ferson and Schadt (1996), Ferson and Qian (2004)) can be described as follows. The presence of differential performance (positive or negative alphas) is tested for each of the M funds in the population. Then, a conventional significance level γ is set (e.g., 5 percent) and all funds with p-values smaller than γ are said to have significant estimated alphas.

  • The different sources of potential confounding in time series studies of air pollution and mortality can be broadly classified as either measured or unmeasured. Important measured confounders include weather variables such as temperature and dewpoint temperature. Daily temperature measurements are readily available for metropolitan areas in the USA and numer- ous studies have demonstrated a relationship between temperature and mortality which is gen- erally positive for warm summer days and negative for cold winter days (e.g. Curriero et al. (2002)).

  • Cognition encompasses the scientific study of the human mind and how it processes information; it focuses on one of the most difficult of all mysteries that humans have addressed. The mind is an enormously complex system holding a unique position in science: by necessity, we must use the mind to study itself, and so the focus of study and the instrument used for study are recursively linked. The sheer tenacity of human curiosity has in our own lifetimes brought answers to many of the most challenging scientific questions we have had the ambition to ask.

  • The compensating crank is an adjustable lever in the feedback linkage between the servomotor and the large plunger of the dashpot. Adjusting the compensating crank adjusts the amount the large dashpot plunger moves for a given movement of the servomotor. If there is no leakage in the oil reservoir, the small dashpot plunger will move rigidly with the large plunger and there will be additional permanent speed droop.

  • Signal sequences often containa-helix-destabilizing amino acids within the hydrophobic core. In the precursor of the Escherichia coliouter-membrane protein PhoE,the glycine residue at position)10 (Gly )10 ) is thought to be responsible for the break in the a-helix. Previously,we showed that substitution of Gly )10 bya-helix-promoting residues (Ala, Cys or Leu) reduced the proton-motive force dependency of the translocation of the precursor, but the actual role of the helix breaker remained obscure. ...

  • The structure of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa immunotype 1 was studied after mild acid and strong alkaline degradations by MS and NMR spectroscopy. Three types of LPS molecules were found, including those with an unsubstituted glycoform 1 core (A) or an isomeric glycoform 2 core substituted with one O-polysaccharide repeating unit (B) or with a long-chain O-polysaccharide. Therefore, of two core glycoforms, only glycoform 2 accepts the O-polysaccharide. LPS molecules, an O-acetyl group is present in the outer core region at unknown position....

  • Gate valves are classified as either rising stem or nonrising stem valves. For the nonrising stem gate valve, the stem is threaded on the lower end into the gate. As the hand wheel on the stem is rotated, the gate travels up or down the stem on the threads while the stem remains vertically stationary. This type valve will almost always have a pointer-type indicator threaded onto the upper end of the stem to indicate valve position. Figures 2 and 3 illustrate rising-stem gate valves and nonrising stem gate valves.
