  • The rationale for selecting three cardinal symptoms is based on their high sensitivity and their relatively high specificity for ABRS, especially when considering the time interval of persistence for 10 days or longer. 36-38 Purulent nasal drainage predicts presence of bacteria on antral aspi- ration when reported as purulent rhinorrhea by the patient, when manifest as postnasal drip or purulent discharge in the posterior pharynx, or when observed in the nasal cavity or near the sinus ostium. 39,40 Purulent rhinorrhea also predicts radiographic evidence of ABRS.

  • Based on the discussion of contracting's implications for earnings calculation, we model operating cash flows and the formal accounting process by which forecasted future operating cash flows are incorporated in earnings. The modeling enables us to generate specific integrated predictions for: i) the relative abilities of earnings and operating cash flows to predict future operating cash flows; and ii) firms' time series properties of operating cash flows, accruals and earnings. We also predict cross-sectional variation in the relative forecast-abilities and correlations.

  • We compare the predicted values with actual correlations for the sample firms and investigate the cross-sectional relation between them to assess the extent to which the simple model described in the previous section fits the data. First, we report the average values of the predicted serial-and cross-correlations among earnings changes, operating cash flow changes and accrual changes.

  • Consider the family of sensor routing protocols where each sensor communicates either directly or indirectly with a base station. In turn the base station correlates and aggregates information from each sensor. Accordingly, the base station will need to verify the authenticity of the sensor, the integrity of the communication and ascertain that it is not a replay of an earlier communication. Recall the assumption that the base station is computationally robust and secure. In our protocol each sensor j shares a unique 64 bit Key Key , with the base station.

  • In contrast to many languages (like Russian or French), modern English does not distinguish formal and informal (“T/V”) address overtly, for example by pronoun choice. We describe an ongoing study which investigates to what degree the T/V distinction is recoverable in English text, and with what textual features it correlates. Our findings are: (a) human raters can label English utterances as T or V fairly well, given sufficient context; (b), lexical cues can predict T/V almost at human level. ...

  • Different summarization requirements could make the writing of a good summary more difficult, or easier. Summary length and the characteristics of the input are such constraints influencing the quality of a potential summary. In this paper we report the results of a quantitative analysis on data from large-scale evaluations of multi-document summarization, empirically confirming this hypothesis.

  • Sentence fluency is an important component of overall text readability but few studies in natural language processing have sought to understand the factors that define it. We report the results of an initial study into the predictive power of surface syntactic statistics for the task; we use fluency assessments done for the purpose of evaluating machine translation. We find that these features are weakly but significantly correlated with fluency. Machine and human translations can be distinguished with accuracy over 80%.

  • Digital signal processing is currently in a period of rapid growth caused by recent advances inVLSI technology. This is especially true of three areas of optimum signal pro- cessing; namely, real-time adaptive signal processing, eigenvector methods of spectrum estimation, and parallel processor implementations of optimum filtering and prediction algorithms. In this edition the book has been brought up to date by increasing the emphasis on the above areas and including several new developments.

  • Thorough evaluation of the infertile couple before in vitro fertilization (IVF) is critical in achieving the best outcomes and avoiding complications. Most IVF centers organize the evaluation by using a checklist that the nurse coordinator and physician assure is complete before proceeding with the cycle. DAY 3 FOLLICLE-STIMULATING HORMONE A level exceeding 25 mIU/ml (about 12 mIU/ml using current assays) has been correlated with a very low chance of pregnancy (1).

  • We directly test our contracting arguments' and simple model's that earnings by itself is a better forecast of future operating cash flows than current operating cash flows by itself. The test uses earnings and cash flows individually as forecasts of one-to three-yearahead operating cash flows. Since this test does not require estimation of any parameters, all forecasts are out of sample. We also test the proposition that the forecasting superiority of current earnings relative to current operating cash flows increases with the operating cash cycle, 8.

  • Empirical research has found that highly profitable firms face a lower cost of equity funding (for example, Hail and Leuz (2006)). This work has not looked at banks. In the third column of Table 1, we use earnings (defined as net income over equity) to proxy for future profitability. We find that high profitability compresses the market beta. In other words, more profitable banks tend to be less correlated with the market return, facing therefore a lower risk premium.

  • The dementia familial encephalopathy with neuroserpin inclusion bodies (FENIB) is caused by point mutations in the neuroserpin gene.We have shown a correlation between the predicted effect of the mutation and the number of intracerebral inclusions, and an inverse relationshipwith the age of onset of disease. Our previous work has shown that the intraneuronal inclusions in FENIB result from the sequential interactionbetween the reactive centre loopofone neuroserpin molecule withb-sheet A of the next. ...

  • The results of experiments involving direct comparisons of root and penetrometer resistance indicate that penetrometers experience two to eight times greater resistance than plant roots penetrating soil (Table 1). Dexter (1987) suggests that this ratio of penetrometer resistance to root resistance is positively correlated with soil strength, being greater in ‘stronger’ soils.

  • Microbial biomass formation on root surfaces can be measured in plants growing in solution with or without an inert solid support. Carbon flow to the biomass can be measured by growing plants in solution or soil on a continuous source of 14C02 and the expected biomass formation predicted. The lack of correlation between measured and predicted biomass can be explained by oligotrophic growth of the micro-organisms.

  • Carcinoma of the lung is the most common cause of cancer-related death in men and women. Prognosis correlates strongly with stage of disease at presentation and to some degree with the histological subtype of the tumor. Histological classifications of lung cancer were somewhat arbitrary and a matter of convenience. However, multiple lines of differentiation are often found within a single tumor, if it is sufficiently sampled.

  • ORGANIZATIONL CHANGE THROUGH THE MANDATED IMOLEMENTATION OF NEW INFORMATION SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY : A MODIFIED TECHNOLOGY ACCEPTANCE MODEL A second shortcoming of the validity literature is more fundamental. In a world in which student background characteristics are known to be correlated with academic success (i.e. with both SAT scores and collegiate grades), it is quite difficult to interpret validity estimates that fail to take account of these background characteristics.
