This book is a combination of experiences in which I have been involved
over my professional career. It brings a combination of ideas together
that include methods of communicating, strategies for behavior change,
ways to assess problems, and methods to facilitate self-management. The
concepts presented in this book have been tested in a variety of clinical
trials where lifestyle change was needed to determine if dietary change
At the end of the session, participants should be able to: becoming aware of your patterns of interactional behavior, becoming aware of the effect of your behavior on others, receiving information to correct inaccurate perceptions and assumptions.
At times you will also need to show the subordinate that you understand his feelings and, from time to time, that you agree with his thoughts or actions. How can you non-verbally convey these attitudes using body formations? The new toolkit focuses on relapse prevention, risks of
secondhand smoke exposure and the health benefits
of quitting smoking for mother and infant. It also
emphasizes the potential and underlying issues related
to relapse including postpartum depression, stress and
miscarriage. An appendix for counselors to use as a
reference tool during counseling sessions is also included
in the toolkit.
The first step of the screening process was a group or individual counseling session to
explain the purpose and process of screening. A flipchart was used to assist in this
process (see Appendix 2). During an individual counseling session, informed consent was
obtained and pregnancy status was assessed. Syndromic assessment for sexually
transmitted infections was part of the examination. For most of the project, women were
screened primarily at health-center level by nurses using visual inspection with acetic
acid (vinegar), known as VIA.
