Many crop species, which countless people rely for survival, are negatively affected.
As rates of deforestation and land degradation, and losses of biodiversity and
ecosystem services, continue to rise globally, the international community is faced
with the challenge of finding land use interventions that can mitigate or reduce the
impact of these environmental issues. Agroforestry, the integration of trees in farming
systems, has the potential for providing rural livelihoods and habitats for species
outside formally protected lands, connecting nature reserves, and alleviating resourceuse
pressure on conservation areas.

Research objectives: Thesis was the first studied methodically systematic assessment of genetic diversity by morphological indicators combined with molecular markers, identification of Vietnamese native Dendroium species based on the ITS sequences. The results of the thesis have significance in the classification, the conservation service, and selection and breed new varieties; these will be contributing to improve Vietnam orchids.

The genomics revolution of the past decade has greatly enhanced our understanding of
the genetic composition of living organisms including many plant species of economic
importance. Complete genomic sequences of Arabidopsis and several major crops, together
with high-throughput technologies for analyses of transcripts, proteins and mutants, provide
the basis for understanding the relationship between genes, proteins and phenotypes.
Contraceptive use accounts for a substantial portion of the variation in
observed fertility rates (others include age of marriage, abortion rates, post-
partum amenorrhea and abstinence, and occurrence of marital separations).
Although there have been dramatic increases in the use of family planning

Invasive alien plants are harmful non-native plant species whose introduction
or spread threatens the environment, the economy, and society,
including human health. They can be introduced into Canada from other
countries or continents, or from one region of Canada to another. The current
threats posed by invasive alien plants are real and growing.
Why are invasive alien plants a problem? The economic cost of invasive alien
plants to Canadians is enormous. Weeds in crops and pastures alone cost an
estimated $2.2 billion annually.
Under the Pharmaceutical Zero-for-Zero Initiative, which entered into force in 1995, the
United States and its major trading partners eliminated tariffs on many pharmaceuticals,
their derivatives, and certain chemical intermediates used to make pharmaceuticals. The
U.S. list of pharmaceutical products and chemical intermediates that are eligible for duty-
free treatment under the agreement is presented in the Pharmaceutical Appendix to the
Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States.
The utility of primer pairs in SCoTs was advocated by Gorji et al. (2011). SCoT
markers are generally reproducible, and it is suggested that primer length and annealing
temperature are not the sole factors determining reproducibility (Gorji et al., 2011). They are
dominant markers, however, while a number of co-dominant markers are also generated
during amplification, and thus they could be used for genetic diversity analysis (Collard &
Mackill, 2009b). This has been validated through study of genetic diversity among rice
varieties (Collard & Mackill, 2009b).
The theoretical metrics
developed, such as genetic variance and heritability (Fisher, 1930; Wright, 1931), provided
the quantitative standards necessary for the evolutionary synthesis. Further research has
focused on the origin of genetic diversity, its maintenance and its role in evolution. Simple
questions such as “who breeds with whom” initiated studies on the relatedness of

Information about climate1 is used to make decisions every day. From farmers deciding
which crops to plant next season to mayors in large cities deciding how to prepare for future heat
waves, and from an insurance company assessing future flood risks to a national security planner
assessing future conflict risks from the impacts of drought, users of climate information span a
vast array of sectors in both the public and private spheres. Each of these communities has
different needs for climate data, with different time horizons (see Box 1) and different tolerances

Many visual devices and gadgets preceded cinema, too many to
list here in detail. A widespread and well-known one was the camera
obscura, first constructed in 1645, which projected views in a dark room,
for painters. Around the same time Anastasius Kircher built a special
room to project images with mirrors, which looked somewhat like a
cinema. A specialised building with many people using specialised
equipment was necessary to project the images.
Increasing attention has also been given to
dissecting and understanding diversity in relation to genes underlying important agronomic
traits in a number of crops. Molecular phylogenetics and genetic diversity analysis can help
to clarify the taxonomic identity and evolutionary relationships of the wild relatives of crop
species. These methods can also help prevent misidentification and carefully plan effective
germplasm management strategies.
This book is about the conservation of genetic diversity of wild plants in situ in
their natural surroundings, primarily in existing protected areas but also outside
conventional protected areas. A lot of effort has been dedicated to conserving plant
biodiversity, but most of this has focused on rare plant communities or individual
species threatened with extinction.
Producers are also avid users of social media. Historically, producers have networked within a defined
geographic territory. Because people generally only buy from producers they trust, developing trust has
generally meant face-to-face interaction. However, as people grow more accustomed to trusting
relationships developed online, producers who excel at developing such relationships will likely pursue
licenses and sales opportunities outside traditional geographic areas.
