  • Farming of groupers (members of the Serranidae, subfamily Epinephelinae) is widely practised in Asia, particularly in the tropical East (China, Hong Kong SAR, Taiwan Province of China) and Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam). Most grouper species bring high prices in local or export markets, and thus are an attractive culture proposition for coastal aquaculture farmers.

  • Culture of Cells for Tissue Engineering is a new volume in the John Wiley series Culture of Specialized Cells, with focus on procedures for obtaining, manipulating, and using cell sources for tissue engineering. The book has been designed to follow the successful tradition of other Wiley books from the same series, by selecting a limited number of diverse, important, and successful tissue engineering systems and providing both the general background and the detailed protocols for each tissue engineering system.

  • Tissue culture was first devised at the beginning of the twentieth century [Harrison, 1907; Carrel, 1912] (Table 1.1) as a method for studying the behavior of animal cells free of systemic variations that might arise in vivo both during normal homeostasis and under the stress of an experiment. As the name implies, the technique was elaborated first with undisaggregated fragments of tissue, and growth was restricted to the migration of cells from the tissue fragment, with occasional mitoses in the outgrowth.

The resulting estimates of ( ) ( ) ( ) θ δ , J = cov x j ,μ j var x j are displayed in Figure 1.3. The trends identified in Figures 1.1 and 1.2 are again clear. First,...

  • Projects today have dramatically increased in complexity, requiring a culturally and functionally diverse mix of individuals who must be integrated into an effective unit – a project team. Effective teamwork is the key to project success during all phases of the project life cycle. Tough global competition has created an acute need for faster, more flexible, and highly competitive operations. These needs can be met only by developing high-performing teams. Effective team building is one of the prime responsibilities of the project manager (Knutson, Joan, 2001).

  • One way to avoid that problem is to look at sub-national jurisdic- tions. For example, the 50 U.S. states have much less variation in reli- gion and culture than do two nations such as the United States and China. In 2002, the Fraser Institute produced its first edition of the Economic Freedom of North America, which provided an index of economic freedom in U.S. states and Canadian provinces (see Karabegoviç and McMahon 2008).

  • An optogenetic upgrade for the tet - OFF system fused the inhibitor to the blue light-responsive B-LID degron and optimized the performance of this construct with regard to the number of Med25VBD repeats. This approach resulted in an optogenetic upgrade of the popular Tet-OFF (TetR-VP64, tetO7-PhCMVmin)  system  that  allows tunable, blue light-inducible gene expression in HEK-293T  cells.

  • The success of clinical IVF was initially compromised by sub-optimal culture conditions, resulting in impaired embryo development (1–6) and a subsequent loss of viability. However, research during the past 10–15 years has resulted in the development of more physiological and effective culture media capable of maintaining the viability of the developing embryo (7–10). This in turn has resulted in an increase in implantation rates and a decrease in the number of pregnancies lost. Furthermore, more suitable culture conditions produce embryos more able to survive cryopreservation (11). ...
