  • In this paper, a method to reproduce realistic driving feeling and improve the returnability of steer-by-wire systems (SBW) is proposed by measuring the roadwheel motor's current directly. The key contribution presented here is a novel method to recreate the driving feeling in term of force feedback with simpie and cheap current sensors. A current sensor is used to fully measure the steering torque on the rack of steering mechanism. This measured steering torque therefore, includes the overall effects of road conditions, aligning moments, tire properties and so on.

  • These days, it is impossible to think of an area of knowledge that can keep on developing without a collaboration in interdisciplinary fields. Electromotive force is a type of energy per unit of electric charge that is converted reversibly from chemical, mechanical, or other forms of energy into electrical energy by a dynamo, battery, electrochemical cells, thermoelectric devices, solar cells, transformers, and so on. The theory of electromotive Force is currently one of the most important research topics within the electrical engineering domain.

  • Thermal noise from optical coatings is a growing area of concern, and overcoming limits to the sensitivity of high-precision measurements by thermal noise is one of the greatest challenges faced by experimental physicists. In this timely book, internationally renowned scientists and engineers examine our current theoretical and experimental understanding. Beginning with the theory of thermal noise in mirrors and substrates, subsequent chapters discuss the technology of depositing coatings and state-of-the-art dielectric coating techniques used in precision measurement.

  • To facilitate the use of syntactic information in the study of child language acquisition, a coding scheme for Grammatical Relations (GRs) in transcripts of parent-child dialogs has been proposed by Sagae, MacWhinney and Lavie (2004). We discuss the use of current NLP techniques to produce the GRs in this annotation scheme. By using a statistical parser (Charniak, 2000) and memorybased learning tools for classification (Daelemans et al., 2004), we obtain high precision and recall of several GRs. ...

  • As a consequence of the increasing importance of tritium resulting from nuclear fission and neutron activation, from its use in accelerators, from its use in research and industry, and from its use in the investigation of the environment and its distribution in the environment, the NCRP designated a scientific committee to prepare a report on the currently acceptable methods of measuring tritium. This report is particularly aimed in assisting an individual to select a procedure suitable to the problem at hand....

  • This book is motivated to a large extent by our dissatisfaction with current practices in behavioral measurement. Most of the basic data consists of dichotomous responses, and much of the rest is made of responses on short scales. Neither type of data furnishes information that can inherently be considered more than ordinal. The dominant contemporary treatment of this data is to derive from it scores on interval-scale latent variables through the application of one or another"model" that is presumed to explain the data.

  • In this paper we present research in which we apply (i) the kind of intrinsic evaluation metrics that are characteristic of current comparative HLT evaluation, and (ii) extrinsic, human task-performance evaluations more in keeping with NLG traditions, to 15 systems implementing a language generation task. We analyse the evaluation results and find that there are no significant correlations between intrinsic and extrinsic evaluation measures for this task.

  • The main goal of this paper is to propose automatic schemes for the translation paired comparison method. This method was proposed to precisely evaluate a speech translation system's capability. Furthermore, the method gives an objective evaluation result, i.e., a score of the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC). The TOEIC score is used as a measure of one's speech translation capability. However, this method requires tremendous evaluation costs. Accordingly, automatization of this method is an important subject for study.

  • In the new millennium, the knowledge half-life of electronic systems is less than four years. Consider Theo A.M. Classen’s recent statement: “Usefulness of a product = Log (Technology)”1. This requires us to carefully ponder, then to become skilled in, the level of technology built in new electronic systems and products that we often take for granted. Simply stated, millions of transistors combined with millions of bytes of software equals the current level of technology developed over a period of just 50 years.

  • This paper presents a method for building genetic language taxonomies based on a new approach to comparing lexical forms. Instead of comparing forms cross-linguistically, a matrix of languageinternal similarities between forms is calculated. These matrices are then compared to give distances between languages. We argue that this coheres better with current thinking in linguistics and psycholinguistics. An implementation of this approach, called PHILOLOGICON, is described, along with its application to Dyen et al.’s (1992) ninety-five wordlists from Indo-European languages. ...

  • Sentence compression is the task of producing a summary at the sentence level. This paper focuses on three aspects of this task which have not received detailed treatment in the literature: training requirements, scalability, and automatic evaluation. We provide a novel comparison between a supervised constituentbased and an weakly supervised wordbased compression algorithm and examine how these models port to different domains (written vs. spoken text).

  • This paper qualifies what a true termrecognition systems would have to recognize. The exact bracketing of the maximal termform is then proposed as an achieveable goal upon which current system performance should be measured. How recall and precision metrics are best adapted for measuring term recognition is suggested. derlying premises should be made clear. Firstly, the automatic system is designed to recognize segments of text that, conventionally, have been manually identified by a terminologist, indexer, lexicographer or other trained individual.

  • From the very beginning of the transition from the traditional purchasing system reviews to the redesigned assessment approach that replaced them, it was understood that further refinement and continuous improvement was planned. Consistent with that long-term strategy, and building on the originally redesigned federal purchasing assessments, the business system assessment models of the PEAmembers have evolved to be more aligned with the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) approach to performance measurement and management, which is currently in use by many “world class” private corporations.
