  • The primary purpose of preparing this edition is to provide an update. In the 14 years since the first edition was published, ecological risk assessment has gone from being a marginal activity to being a relatively mature practice. There are now standard frameworks and guidance documents in the United States and several other countries. Ecological risk assessment is applied to the regulation of chemicals, the remediation of contaminated sites, the importation of exotic organisms, the management of watersheds, and other environmental management problems....

  • The same amount of water has been present on our planet for about 4 billion years, since shortly after the Earth was formed. Since then it has cycled through evaporation, condensation, precipitation and surface runoff multiple times. Water scarcity as an abiotic factor ranging from moderate to severe stress levels, accompanied by loss of moisture in the soil, is extremely hard for most organisms to cope with, particularly terrestrial plants and their food-chain dependents.

  • The notion of Ecosystem Services (ES: (Daily 1997; Carpenter 2003; Kremen and Ostfeld 2005) provides a cohesive scientific view of the many mechanisms through which nature contributes to human well-being. Focusing on both the biophysical mechanisms of ES provision and the economic implications of ES use can allow our societies to balance the sides of the “nature vs. the economy” equation, leading to better management and governance (Millennium Ecosystem Assessment 2002).

  • This study assesses the life cycle environmental impacts of the production, use and disposal of different carrier bags for the UK in 2006. In recent years, the relative environmental impacts of lightweight carrier bags and other options has been debated. By the Spring of 20098 leading supermarkets had halved the number of single use carrier bags used. However, questions still remain about the environmental significance of lightweight carrier bags, especially with regard to the wider debate on global warming. ...

  • The LCA covered several different environmental impact categories; global warming, acidification, eutrophication, ozone layer depletion, photooxidant formation and resource use as well as toxicological impact categories. In addition the results were weighted using two different weighting methods; Ecotax 02 and Eco-Indicator 99. The results showed different patterns regarding where in the life cycle the main potential environmental impact can be seen.

  • The soil ecosystem provides services such as carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling, water purification, provisioning of industrial and pharmaceutical goods, and a mitigating sink for chemical and biological agents. However, the soil is subject to various degradation processes. Its relation with the hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere makes the interacting processes even more complex. Moreover, as the soilhuman interactions increase, threats, leading to a series of impacts on soil health, become more important....

  • To appropriately mitigate environmental impacts from transportation, it is necessary for decision makers to consider the life-cycle energy use and emissions. Most current decision-making relies on analysis at the tailpipe, ignoring vehicle production, infrastructure provision, and fuel production required for support. We present results of a comprehensive life-cycle energy, greenhouse gas emissions, and selected criteria air pollutant emissions inventory for automobiles, buses, trains, and airplanes in the US, including vehicles...
