  • My interest in business cycles was rekindled by Professor Jim Ford, my mentor during the first part of my career at the University of Birmingham. Since completing my PhD on business cycles in 1983, my lecturing and research had focussed on money, banking and finance. Jim introduced me to Shackle’s much neglected work on business cycles, which is discussed in Chapter 4 and emphasises the key role bank lending decisions play in the propogation of business cycles.

  • Economic policy makers, macroprudential supervisors or investors are interested in reli- able estimates of the equilibrium level of credit in the economy. While earlier theoretical and empirical studies concentrated mostly on the aggregate level of credit to the pri- vate sector or the value of corporate credit, more recent studies focus on the problem of credit to households.

  • This note presents the simplest overlapping generations model. The model is due to Diamond (1965), who built on earlier work by Samuelson (1958). Overlapping generations models capture the fact that individuals do not live forever, but die at some point and thus have finite life-cycles. Overlapping generations models are especially useful for analysing the macro-economic effects of different pension systems.

  • Ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO) is the key enzyme of the Calvin cycle, catalyzing the fixation of inorganic carbon dioxide to organic sugars. Unlike most enzymes, RuBisCO is extremely slow, substrate unspecific, and catalyzes undesired side-reactions, which are considered to be responsible for the slow deactivation observed in vitro, a phenomenon known as fallover.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationships among returns of various sub-indexes in the Istanbul Stock Exchange by using various methods. In particular, we look at the extent to which various sub-indexes are cointegrated or not by using three different methods. For the first two, Engle and Granger’s (1987) single equation models and Johansen’s (1988) multivariate cointegration methods are the among the most commonly used methods for assessing long-run relationships.

  • The tumor suppressor p16 INK4a has functions beyond cell-cycle control via cyclin-dependent kinases. A coordinated remodeling ofN- and O-glycosyla-tion, and an increase in the presentation of the endogenous lectin galectin-1 sensing these changes on the surface of p16 INK4a -expressing pancreatic carcinoma cells (Capan-1), lead to potent pro-anoikis signals.

A dictionary graph is built starting from senses (vertices) and explicit or implicit relations in the dictionary (edges). The approach is based on the identification of edge sequences which constitute cycles in the dictionary graph (possibly with one edge reversed) and relate a source to a target word sense.

  • Next, a few words about our strategy. It is well recognized now that one has to go beyond the Einstein-Hilbert action for gravity, both from the experimental viewpoint (eg.,because of Dark Energy) and from the theoretical viewpoint (eg., because of the UV incompleteness of quantized Einstein gravity, and the need of its unification with the Standard Model of Elementary Particles). In our approach, the origin of inflation is purely geometrical, ie. is closely related to space-time and gravity.

  • The issue of the equilibrium level of credit in the economy is addressed in the liter- ature from di®erent perspectives. Several papers use theoretical models to analyze the equilibrium level of credit over business cycles by identifying phases of credit rationing or credit booms (Kiyotaki and Moore, 1997; Azariadis and Smith, 1998; Lorenzoni, 2008). In the similar spirit, DSGE models have been used recently to analyze the asymmetry in the behavior of borrowers and lenders in reaction to structural, and in particular ¯nancial shocks (Iacoviello, 2005; Gerali et al., 2010)....

  • The effect of fast and three-step charge mode on the capacity and cycle life of lead±acid battery negative plates was investigated using a model mini electrode (ME). It has been found that the charge algorithm exerts a strong effect on the charge acceptance of the negative electrode. In the two-step charging mode I1, j2 with increase of the current at the ®rst step of charge, the capacity of the negative electrode decreases and the cycle life shortens. This phenomenon is reversible as it is probably due to the incomplete reduction of PbSO4 to Pb. The phenomenon is explained...
