  • The molecular definition of tumor antigens, costimulatory signals, and the possibility to genetically engineer tumor cells as well as simple protocols for efficient isolation and preparation of dendritic cells (DC) renew the interest in tumor immunotherapy and vaccination, in particular. Engineering of tumor cells with the gene of a particular cytokine is a way of releasing that cytokine at the tumor site. In contrast to bolus administration, it provides a constant supply of cytokine.

  • Retroviral vectors have gained an increasing value in gene therapy because they stably deliver therapeutic genes to the host cell genome. These therapeutic genes are supposed to rectify consequences of inherited and acquired mutated genes in the host cell genome, or alter host cell function to cure diseases.

  • The initial idea that exogenous opiates can affect immune function was first floated in 1898 when Cantacuze described the effect of opium on leukocyte phagocytosis in guinea pig model. Recently findings from several investigators (Quaglio et al., 2002; Nath et al., 2002; Georges et al., 1999; Vallejo et al., 2004; Roy et al., 2006; Somaini et al., 2008) support the role of opiates in suppressing a variety of immunological end points in opiate abusers.

  • This book introduces some basic and advanced studies on ionic liquids in the electrochemical fi eld. Although ionic liquids are known by only a few scientists and engineers, their applications ’ potential in future technologies is unlimited. There are already many reports of basic and applied studies of ionic liquids as reaction solvents, but the reaction solvent is not the only brilliant future of the ionic liquids. Electrochemistry has become a big fi eld covering several key ideas such as energy, environment, nanotechnology, and analysis.

  • 2004Tuberculosis is a major health problem throughout the world causing large number of deaths, more than that from any other single infectious disease. The review attempts to summarize theinformation available on host immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Since the mainroute of entry of the causative agent is the respiratory route, alveolar macrophages are theimportant cell types, which combat the pathogen. Various aspects of macrophage-mycobacteriuminteractions and the role of macrophage in host response such as binding of M.

  • The ultimate goal of cancer research is the development of effective anticancer therapy. During the last several decades, the discovery of oncogenes, tumor suppressors, growth factors, signal transduction pathways has dramatically escalated our understanding of cancer cell biology and mechanisms of cell transformation.1-3 Hundreds of cellular proteins and pathways have been logically considered as molecular targets in a mechanism-based approaches of anticancer drug development.4-6 Yet, the progress in cancer treatment has not paralleled these dramatic achievements in basic research.

  • There is a need for development of new diagnostic tools to allow earlier detection of active disease, predict disease progression and evaluate the response to periodontal therapy, thereby improving the clinical management of patients with periodontal diseases. Advances in periodontal diseases diagnostic research are moving toward methods whereby periodontal risk can be identified and quantified by objective measures such as biomarkers.

  • A third of all general practice consultations are for musculoskeletal complaints. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used, and their gastrointestinal effects account for an estimated 1200 deaths per year in the UK. A hitherto unsuspected inflammatory component is now known to accompany conditions such as atherosclerosis. As understanding of the complex mechanisms underlying the inflammatory process increases, new ways of influencing it are developed, as witness therapies directed against specific cytokines, and COX-2 specific NSAIDs (COXIBs). ...

  • Association studies from north India probing multiple loci across the spectrum of candidate cytokine genes are scanty. The present study, therefore, was aimed to bring in focus certain unexplored polymorphisms in the context of tuberculosis susceptibility in north Indian population. The role and importance of genetic background in tuberculosis has now become univocal with ethnicity playing a crucial role. Probing new loci relating to tuberculosis susceptibility could suggest novel approach in pharmacogenomics and therapy to combat this pathogen.
