The existence of words is usually taken for granted by the speakers of a language. To
speak and understand a language means - among many other things - knowing the
words of that language. The average speaker knows thousands of words, and new
words enter our minds and our language on a daily basis.
Why do some contaminants remain in soils indefinitely? How much of a threat do they pose to human health or the environment? The need for effective and economic site decontamination arises daily. Geoenvironmental Engineering: Contaminated Soils, Pollutant Fate, and Mitigation discusses why soils remain contaminated, focusing on the development of the factors, properties, characteristics, and parameters of soils and individual contaminants.
Because of the frequent, often daily, exposure to a large number and diversity of
pathogens (disease-causing agents), wastewater personnel have general and specific
concerns related to the potential health hazards presented by pathogens. Pathogens
commonly found in wastewater and of concern to wastewater personnel include
viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoans, and helminths. Allergens, endotoxins, and exotoxins
are also found in wastewater and represent a concern to wastewater personnel.
We wrote this second edition of the Handbook in an
attempt to help physicians and sonographers learn
practical and useful ultrasound concepts that can be
applied daily in the echocardiography laboratory.
Our goal is to help improve the quality of day-to-day
echocardiographic studies as performed in the real
world. We have broadly expanded subject content to
serve as a study guide for both the physician preparing
for the ASEeXAM and the sonographer studying
for the RDCS or RCS examination.
In addition, the distributions of deaths by age and by cause in Delhi are very different
from those in the U.S. In the U.S., over 70 percent of all deaths occur after the age of 65. In
Delhi, over 70 percent of all deaths occur before the age of 65, with over 20 percent occurring
before the age of five. Furthermore, 46 percent of all non-trauma deaths in the U.S. are
attributable to cardiovascular disease compared to only 23 percent in Delhi.' Because the main
effects of acute exposure to air pollution on daily deaths occur through impacts on...

Leading air quality professionals describe different aspects of air pollution. The book presents information on four broad areas of interest in the air pollution field; the air pollution monitoring; air quality modeling; the GIS techniques to manage air quality; the new approaches to manage air quality. This book fulfills the need on the latest concepts of air pollution science and provides comprehensive information on all relevant components relating to air pollution issues in urban areas and industries....
With the development of computing technologies, digital media security becomes an ever
increasing issue of daily life. As computer software and hardware evolves and as more
of it becomes accessible as an Internet application or service, information security has
gone from initially protecting digital images, into the area of multimedia. This area of
multimedia includes computer graphics, images, digital video and digital audio. As the
Internet expands, so does the significance of multimedia security.
We find that dynamically consistent (exponential) impatience cannot explain the
magnitude of the decline. The model needs either an implausibly large degree of annual
impatience, or a very large intertemporal elasticity of substitution. Intuitively, the
problem arises because the exponential discount rate is constant over time:1 even a mild
degree of short-run discounting, say a daily discount rate of 1 percent, implies a daily
discount factor of 0.99 and thus an annual discount factor of 0.99365 = 0.03.
All of the young women we spoke to did some sort of housework. If they were not
mothers, many of the young women cared for other peopleís children in some way.
When asked, ìDo you take care of any kids like sisters, brothers, or cousins?î nearly half
(48%) of the young women who answered this question said yes. When asked how often
they did this work, their answers ranged from daily to a couple of times a month. Several
of the young women wanted to take babysitting certificates.
Young women also did unpaid work in the form of volunteering...
As more users are connected to the Internet and conduct
their daily activities electronically, computer users have become
the target of an underground economy that infects hosts
with malware or adware for financial gain. Unfortunately,
even a single visit to an infected web site enables the attacker
to detect vulnerabilities in the user’s applications and force
the download a multitude of malware binaries.

There is no known safe amount of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Fetal alcohol syndrome is a preventable birth defect characterized by growth restriction, facial abnormalities and central nervous dysfunction. Many more babies, however, are diagnosed with fetal alcohol effect, which is a lesser degree of the syndrome. Fetuses of women who ingest six drinks per day are at a 40 percent risk of developing some features of the fetal alcohol syndrome (5;9).
This book is about the evolution of self-help movement organizations in
the United States. The dramatic rise and ubiquity of self-help during the
mid- to late twentieth century positions it high among other healthcare
institutions such as drug rehabilitation, the health maintenance organization
(HMO), and patient rights as an integral part of the landscape marking
our daily lives.
The quantum theory is the first theoretical approach that helps one to successfully understand the atomic and sub-atomic worlds which are too far from the cognition based on the common intuition or the experience of the daily-life. This is a very coherent theory in which a good system of hypotheses and appropriate mathematical methods allow one to describe exactly the dynamics of the quantum systems whose measurements are systematically affected by objective uncertainties.
Most small to medium-sized businesses struggle with marketing. The marketing function is often treated as a cost center--ad hoc activities that don’t provide measurable results that can be tracked to the bottom line. This e-book defines our Strategic Marketing Process that businesses can use to standardize their daily, monthly and annual revenue-generating activities. It covers more than just “traditional” marketing and ties together all go-to-market business activities: strategic planning, financial planning and measurement, creative development, marketing execution and sales.
Because there is no clear definition of the asthma
phenotype, researchers studying the development of this
complex disease turn to characteristics that can be
measured objectively, such as atopy (manifested as the
presence of positive skin-prick tests or the clinical
response to common environmental allergens), airway
hyperresponsiveness (the tendency of airways to narrow
excessively in response to triggers that have little or no
effect in normal individuals), and other measures of
Intravascular catheters are an integral part of the daily practice of
medicine in the intensive care unit. As such, management of these catheters
poses significant challenges to the practitioner. Vascular access is necessary
in the intensive care setting, yet the devices themselves put patients at
significant risk for infection. As hospital infection rates are increasingly used
as a surrogate marker for measuring patient safety and quality healthcare,
preventing catheter-related infection takes on added import...
