  • The first section introduces the basic concepts of number systems, storage of numerical data, and machine arithmetic. Chapters on the Intel math unit architecture, data conversions, and the details of math unit programming establish a framework for developing routines in engineering and scientific code. The second part, entitled Application Development, covers the implementation of a C++ program and flowcharting. A tutorial on Windows programming supplies skills that allow readers to create professional quality programs.

  • • Analog voice data must be translated into a series of binary digits before they can be transmitted in digital transmission system. One means of doing this is called pulse amplitude modulation (PAM). • The process of converting analog signal to digital is also known as A_to_D conversion or A/D conversion. The circuit does the conversion known as A/D converter. In analog modulation (continuous wave modulation), some parameter of a sinusoidal carrier wave is varied continuously in accordance with the message signal. ...

  • As resources become scarce, they become more valuable. Value is evidenced both by the increasing prices of resources and by controversy over resource allocation and management. From forest harvesting and land use conversion throughout North America, to the fragmentation of tropical bird habitat, to acid rain deposition in Eastern Europe, to Siberian tiger habitat loss in Russia, people have significantly affected the ecosystems of the world. Expanding population pressures continue to cause the price of resources to increase and to intensify conflicts over resource allocation....

  • The book is divided into two parts: Circuit Design and System Design. The first part deals with everything that goes directly inside the main code, while the second deals with units that might be located in a library (for code sharing, reuse, and partitioning).

  • Over the past decade, technical innovation and evolution in computer-centered measurement systems have led to significant performance advances and economies of scale from manufacturing processes to biotechnology laboratories that share multisensor information system common denominators. This book provides a definitive instrumentation circuit and system reference, supported by 46 tables of engineering data, that demonstrates a composite, error-modeled design methodology for implementing defined accuracy, computer integrated measurement systems.

  • Word processors or computers used in Japan employ Japanese input method through keyboard stroke combined with Kana (phonetic) character to Kanji (ideographic, Chinese) character conversion technology. The key factor of Kana-to-Kanji conversion technology is how to raise the accuracy of the conversion through the homophone processing, since we have so many homophonic Kanjis. In this paper, we report the results of our Kana-to-Kanji conversion experiments which embody the homophone processing based on large scale collocation data. ...

  • Individual utterances often serve multiple communicative purposes in dialogue. We present a data-driven approach for identification of multiple dialogue acts in single utterances in the context of dialogue systems with limited training data. Our approach results in significantly increased understanding of user intent, compared to two strong baselines.

  • Letter-to-phoneme (L2P) conversion is the process of producing a correct phoneme sequence for a word, given its letters. It is often desirable to reduce the quantity of training data — and hence human annotation — that is needed to train an L2P classifier for a new language. In this paper, we confront the challenge of building an accurate L2P classifier with a minimal amount of training data by combining several diverse techniques: context ordering, letter clustering, active learning, and phonetic L2P alignment.

  • We present an implemented XML data model and a new, simplified query language for multi-level annotated corpora. The new query language involves automatic conversion of queries into the underlying, more complicated MMAXQL query language. It supports queries for sequential and hierarchical, but also associative (e.g. coreferential) relations. The simplified query language has been designed with non-expert users in mind.

  • We present a prototype natural-language problem-solving application for a financial services call center, developed as part of the Amitiés multilingual human-computer dialogue project. Our automated dialogue system, based on empirical evidence from real call-center conversations, features a datadriven approach that allows for mixed system/customer initiative and spontaneous conversation. Preliminary evaluation results indicate efficient dialogues and high user satisfaction, with performance comparable to or better than that of current conversational travel information systems. ...

  • The problem of modeling human understanding and generation of a coherent dialog is investigated by simulating a conversation participant. The rule-based system currently under development attempts to capture the intuitive concept of "topic" using data structures consisting of declarative representations of the subjects under discussion linked to the utterances and rules that generated them. Scripts, goal trees, and a semantic network are brought to bear by general, domain-independent conversational rules to understand and generate coherent topic transitions and specific output utterances.

  • One of the key tasks for analyzing conversational data is segmenting it into coherent topic segments. However, most models of topic segmentation ignore the social aspect of conversations, focusing only on the words used. We introduce a hierarchical Bayesian nonparametric model, Speaker Identity for Topic Segmentation (SITS), that discovers (1) the topics used in a conversation, (2) how these topics are shared across conversations, (3) when these topics shift, and (4) a person-specific tendency to introduce new topics. ...

  • This paper presents experiments which combine a grammar-driven and a datadriven parser. We show how the conversion of LFG output to dependency representation allows for a technique of parser stacking, whereby the output of the grammar-driven parser supplies features for a data-driven dependency parser. We evaluate on English and German and show significant improvements stemming from the proposed dependency structure as well as various other, deep linguistic features derived from the respective grammars. ...

  • I should like to raise some issues concerning the conversion from a traditional Marhine-Readable Dictionary (MRD) on tape to a Lexical Data Base (LDB), in order to highlight some important consequences for computational linguistics which can follow from this transition. The enormous potentialities of the information implicitly stored in a standard printed dictionary or a MRD can only be evidenced and made explicit when the same data are given a new logical structure in a data base model, and exploited by appropriate software. ...

  • We describe an implementation of datadriven selection of emphatic facial displays for an embodied conversational agent in a dialogue system. A corpus of sentences in the domain of the target dialogue system was recorded, and the facial displays used by the speaker were annotated. The data from those recordings was used in a range of models for generating facial displays, each model making use of a different amount of context or choosing displays differently within a context.
