  • Given a set of transactions, find rules that will predict the occurrence of an item based on the occurrences of other items in the transaction. Given a set of transactions T, the goal of association rule mining is to find all rules having support ≥ minsup threshold confidence ≥ minconf threshold Brute-force approach: List all possible association rules Compute the support and confidence for each rule Prune rules that fail the minsup and minconf thresholds  Computationally prohibitive!...

  • Good backup and recovery strategies are key to the health of any organization. Medium- to very-large-scale systems administrators have to protect large amounts of critical data as well as design backup solutions that are scalable and optimized to meet changing conditions. Pro Data Backup and Recovery will cover some of the more common backup applications, such as Symantec NetBackup/BackupExec, EMC NetWorker, and CommVault, but the main discussion will focus on the implementation of 21st century architectures that allow the backup software to be a “commodity” item....

  • We consider a very simple, yet effective, approach to cross language adaptation of dependency parsers. We first remove lexical items from the treebanks and map part-of-speech tags into a common tagset. We then train a language model on tag sequences in otherwise unlabeled target data and rank labeled source data by perplexity per word of tag sequences from less similar to most similar to the target. We then train our target language parser on the most similar data points in the source labeled data. ...

  • In this paper we investigate how much data is required to train an algorithm for attribute selection, a subtask of Referring Expressions Generation (REG). To enable comparison between different-sized training sets, a systematic training method was developed. The results show that depending on the complexity of the domain, training on 10 to 20 items may already lead to a good performance.

  • Parallel corpora are made by human beings. However, as an MT system is an aggregation of state-of-the-art NLP technologies without any intervention of human beings, it is unavoidable that quite a few sentence pairs are beyond its analysis and that will therefore not contribute to the system. Furthermore, they in turn may act against our objectives to make the overall performance worse. Possible unfavorable items are n : m mapping objects, such as paraphrases, non-literal translations, and multiword expressions.

  • In the “old days” of the Internet, most web pages were nothing more than text files containing HTML. When people visited your site, your web server simply made the file available to their browsers. This approach started out fine, but as web sites grew, and issues such as design and navigation became more important, developers found that maintaining consistency across hundreds of HTML files was becoming a massive headache.

  • Structural Testing is used to verify the static strength, or fatigue strength of a component by applying measured loads to the test item. Testing can be done to failure, to contractual requirements or to validate finite element model predictions. DTB has successfully completed thousands of structural tests on items ranging in size and complexity from simple coupons to entire aircraft. Fatigue Testing is carried out with the objective of determining the relationship between the stress range and the number of times it can be applied before causing failure....

  • Databases and database systems are an essential component of life in modern society: most of us encounter several activities every day that involve some interaction with a database. For example, if we go to the bank to deposit or withdraw funds, if we make a hotel or airline reservation, if we access a computerized library catalog to search for a bibliographic item, or if we purchase something online—such as a book, toy, or computer— chances are that our activities will involve someone or some computer program accessing a database.

  • The CPU contains a special set of memory cells called registers that can be read and written to much more rapidly than the main memory area. There are typically between two and one hundred registers depending on the type of CPU. Registers are used for the most frequently needed data items to avoid having to access main memory every time data is needed. As data is constantly being worked on, reducing the need to access main memory (which is often slow compared to the ALU and control units) greatly increases the computer's speed....

  • Conceptually, the equity method treats the investee company as if it were condensed into one balance sheet item and one income statement item and then merged into the investor company at the proportion owned by the investor. The equity method is sometimes called “one-line consolidation” because it results in the same effect on the investor’s earnings and retained earnings as would result from consolidating the financial statements of the investor and investee companies. It does so without combining both companies’ financial statements.

  • Qualitative Analysis of Data There is an important distinction between quantitative research and qualitative research. In quantitative research, the information obtained from the participants is expressed in numerical form. Studies in which we record the number of items recalled, reaction times, or the number of aggressive acts are all examples of quantitative research. In qualitative research, on the other hand, the information obtained from participants is not expressed in numerical form.
