  • Stabilization Programs, Monetary Policy and Exchange Rate Movements in Emerging Markets Economies I use a unique data set consisting of observations on more than 300,000 metropolitan SAT takers from the 1994 cohort, matched to the high schools that students attended. The size of this sample permits accurate estimation of both peer quality and average performance for the great majority of high schools in each of 177 metropolitan housing markets. I find no evidence that the association between peer group and student performance is stronger in high-choice than in low-choice markets....

  • More companies are designing solutions to address data governance and ensure regulatory compliance by reducing data movement. These companies rely on the security and auditing features of the DBMS to ensure that regulated data is not improperly accessed during automated business processes. Requiring large amounts of detail data to be extracted from the DBMS for processing by SAS raises the complexity of maintaining regulatory compliance. This can be particularly challenging for data preparation processes.

  • This paper addresses the issue of how linguistic feedback expressions, prosody and head gestures, i.e. head movements and face expressions, relate to one another in a collection of eight video-recorded Danish map-task dialogues. The study shows that in these data, prosodic features and head gestures significantly improve automatic classification of dialogue act labels for linguistic expressions of feedback.

  • The last quarter-century has seen increasing awareness of the interactions between human societies and the natural environment in which they thrive and upon which they depend. This awareness has been heightened by concerns about resource scarcity, environmental degradation, and global environmental issues. The combination of increased awareness of the environment and recognition of the primitive state of much of the nation’s environmental data has led to a widespread desire to supplement U.S. national economic accounts to include natural resources and environmental assets.

  • Data is getting bigger and more complex by the day, and so are the choices in handling that data. As a modern application developer you need to understand the emerging field of data management, both RDBMS and NoSQL. Seven Databases in Seven Weeks takes you on a tour of some of the hottest open source databases today. In the tradition of Bruce A. Tate's Seven Languages in Seven Weeks, this book goes beyond your basic tutorial to explore the essential concepts at the core each technology.

  • In this article we track four such trends over time. First, and following filmscholars (eg, Bordwell 2006; Bordwell and Thompson 2004; Salt 2006; 2009), we measure the average shot lengths of films and find that the changes seen in our filmsample are consistent with what they have reported. Second, we review and add to the data of Cutting et al (2011b) on the increase in the amount of motion and movement in films. Third, we measure the motion andmovement within shots of different lengths and find a reliable change in pattern. And finally, we measure the luminance of each film.

  • Written by a premier astronomy expert, this book begins with a discussion of the Sun, from sunspots to solar eclipses. It then features over 100 tables on characteristics of the Moon, and the names, positions, sizes, and other key descriptors of all the planets and their satellites. The book tabulates solar and lunar eclipse, comets, close-approach asteroids, and significant meteor showers dates. Twenty-four maps show the surface features of the planets and their moons. The author then looks to the stars, their distances and movements, and their detailed classification and evolution.

  • Preliminary analysis of the data reveals some noteworthy similarities and differences between Chile and the other countries considered. Over this sample period, Chilean interest rates are on average higher, more volatile, and less persistent than the interest rates for the other countries. However, in Chile, the degree of co-movement between retail bank interest rates and the money market rate is essentially the same as in other countries.

  • From February 11 to 13, 2001, at the Lodge at Snowbird ski resort in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah, 17 people met to talk, ski, relax, and try to find common ground. What emerged was the Agile Software Development movement. Representatives from Extreme Programming (XP), Scrum, the Dynamic Systems Development Method (DSDM), Adaptive Software Development (ASD), Crystal Methods, Feature-Driven Development (FDD), Pragmatic Programming, and others sympathetic to the need for an alternative to document-driven, rigorous software development processes convened....

  • Because these subsystems are implemented in SAS TK, they can be installed inside the DBMSs offered by the major DBMS vendors. They are then available to perform some or all of the processing requested by the client. For example, when SAS procedures push down SQL, or when some other SAS process is requested from a client, the processing occurs inside the DBMS where the subsystems are deployed. Appropriate output is returned to the calling client, a SAS session, for example, thereby reducing data movement. In a previous example, we saw that PROC FREQ can push an SQL statement to...

  • Pharmacokinetics describes, in a quantitative manner, the passage of drugs through the body. A series of distinctive parameters such as bioavailability, volume of distribution and clearance are used to describe: --The rate and extent of drug absorption into the blood stream The rate and extent of drug movement out of blood into the tissues The rate of drug removal from the body These parameters can then be used to predict the blood concentration of drug that will arise with any given dosage regime. A diverse range of students will have some exposure to PKs....

  • High-level languages, such as C, C++, and Java, are more like natural languages and thus make programs easier to read and write. Low-level languages are closer to the machine and there is a one-to-many relationship between high-level languages and low-level languages, where language translators such as compilers and interpreters convert each high-level instruction into many low-level instructions. The native language of a particular machine is a low-level language known as machine language and is coded in ones and zeros.

  • Our contribution in this area is the creation of lightweight techniques for securing existing sensor network routing and data movement approaches, such as directed diffusion [5], spin [8] and data dissemination [9, 2]. We assume the computational capability and memory requirements typical of those provided by current generation of sensors. We note that in this work we make no attempt to counter the threat from a widespread denial of service attack against the RF layer.

  • In under-sampling, instead of using all observations of the majority class to train the model, only a random subset of the majority class is used in addition to the minority class. Training samples of the majority class are randomly eliminated until the ratio of the majority and minority classes reach a preset value, usually close to 1. A disadvantage of under-sampling is that it reduces the data available for training.

  • Finally, the HPDD sheds light on one of the leading issues of the day: the relationship between debt and growth. Separating countries into fast-, medium-, or slow–paced growers over 1885–2009, we find an intuitive pattern. 15 Fast growers consistently registered low debt ratios, while slow growers carried the highest debts for much of the sample period (Figure 7, upper panel). Further light is shed on the debt-growth relationship by a bubble chart that compares debt ratios and (total) PPP GDP (Figure 7, lower panel).

  • I am think- ing here of Allan Kaprow, John Cage, or George Maciunas. They sensed that the depictive arts could not be displaced by any more upheavals from within, any more radical versions of depic- tion or anti-depiction. They came to recognize that there was something about the depictive arts that would not permit an- other art form or art dimension to evolve out of them. The new challenge to western art would be advanced in terms of move- ment and the arts of movement. Cage’s piano concert, 4’33”, first presented in 1952, can be seen as the first explicit statement of this...

In the other GCC countries, stock market price changes do not Granger cause oil price changes, whereas oil price shocks Granger cause stock price changes.

  • Advanced Storage Tiering. Having seen the benefits of expanded storage tiers, EMC will continue to implement a tiered/shared model. The plan is to automate data movement between tiers and selectively use solid-state disk for applications that require high performance. Dense, affordable SATA disk will continue to be the standard otherwise. EMC plans to implement Fully Automated Storage Tiering (FAST) for automated, policy-based data movement, which will help streamline storage costs and maximize resource utilization.

  • Although the Flow of Funds data are available only after 1945, it is clear from Figure 3 that the market value of NYSE companies as a fraction of the market value of all U.S. companies has been remarkably constant. The total market value of all domestic corporations is about 1.45 times the market value of NYSE companies. Notice that these values are very close for the entire post-World War II period — not only on average but at peaks and troughs too. If we assume that the ratio is roughly 1.45 in the pre-World War II period as well, we can use the NYSE values to...
