  • I often ask myself, “Why do I do this? Why am I writing another edition of this book? Is it worth it? Isn’t there anything else that I could be doing that would be more beneficial to me, my family, or the human race? Well, of course there is. The fact is, however, I generally love relational databases, I love to write, and I want to help other people get better at what they do. When I was first getting started designing databases, I learned from a few great mentors, but as I wanted to progress, I started looking for material on database design, and...

  • As a consultant, the process of designing and developing technology-based solutions is one that you get to know intimately, thanks to iteration. Having been involved in a dozen or more projects in the past few years, I came to realize that a common component exists at the center of every one of those solutions. That component is the data storage system.

  • Database management has evolved from a specialized computer application to a central component of a modern computing environment, and, as a result, knowl- edge about database systems has become an essential part of an education in com- puter science. In this text, we present the fundamental concepts of database manage- ment. These concepts include aspects of database design, database languages, and database-system implementation.

  • Databases and database systems are an essential component of life in modern society: most of us encounter several activities every day that involve some interaction with a database. For example, if we go to the bank to deposit or withdraw funds, if we make a hotel or airline reservation, if we access a computerized library catalog to search for a bibliographic item, or if we purchase something online—such as a book, toy, or computer— chances are that our activities will involve someone or some computer program accessing a database.

  • Book Description Joomla! is the world’s hottest open-source content management system, and the winner of the 2006 Open Source CMS Prize. While Joomla! is packed with features, its greatest quality is that it is extremely extensible, allowing any number of complex applications to be cleanly integrated. Shopping carts, forums, social networking profiles, job boards, and real estate listings are all examples of extensions developers have written for Joomla!. All of these can run off one Joomla! site, while only one database, template, and core need to be maintained.

  • Overview of Primary Components The Oracle architecture includes a number of primary components, which are discussed further in this lesson. Oracle server: There are several files, processes, and memory structures in an Oracle server; however, not all of them are used when processing a SQL statement. Some are used to improve the performance of the database, to ensure that the database can be recovered in the event of a software or hardware error, or to perform other tasks necessary to maintain the database. The Oracle server consists of an Oracle instance and an Oracle database.

  • In this paper we propose the design of Byzantium, a Byzantine-fault-tolerant database replication middle- ware. Byzantium improves on existing BFT replication for databases both because it has no centralized compo- nents (of whose correctness the integrity of the system depends) and by allowing increased concurrency, which is essential to achieve good performance. The main insight behind our approach is to aim for weaker semantics than traditional BFT replication approaches.

  • At the heart of Greenplum Database is the Parallel Dataflow Engine. This is where the real work of processing and analyzing data is done. The Parallel Dataflow Engine is an optimized parallel processing infrastructure that is designed to process data as it flows from disk, from external files or applications, or from other segments over the gNet interconnect (Figure 9). The engine is inherently parallel—it spans all segments of a Greenplum cluster and can scale effectively to thousands of commodity processing cores.

  • Compiled TSPL programs are created by compiling a TSPL source module that is generated by SAS Enterprise Miner. They do not contain TSPL source statements. Compiled TSPL programs are shared object libraries that are stored inside the DBMS. SAS provides a collection of tools to simplify and automate the process of converting a TSPL source program to compiled TSPL. Some of these tools integrate with specific DBMS vendor tools.

  • Obtaining comprehensive data and information on public debt is challenging. Data availability is limited along the dimensions of time, country coverage, and debt completeness. For example, data on external public debt for developing countries are generally available from the GDF dataset. However, the GDF does not cover advanced economies, and separates public and private components of external debt only for long-term debt. Similarly, the IFS database starts in 1970, but data are available for just a handful of countries in the early years.

  • This paper discusses the structure and components of databases for real-world e-commerce systems. We first present an integrated 8-process value chain needed by the e-commerce system and its associated data in each stage of the value chain. We then discuss logical components of a typical e-commerce database system. Finally, we illustrate a detailed design of an e-commerce transaction processing system and comment on a few design considerations specific to e-commerce database systems, such as the primary key, foreign key, outer join, use of weak entity, and schema partition.

  • This book is meant to give you a head start on the changes from Visual Basic to Visual Basic.NET (VB.NET). Most of the book assumes that you are comfortable with Visual Basic 6.0 (VB6), so the book endeavors to be a quick introduction to the major differences between VB6 and the new VB.NET. I’ve been using Visual Basic since version 1.0. The most dramatic shift had been in the move from VB3 to VB4, when class modules were introduced, and VB started on its long, slow path to becoming object oriented.
