  • number of books on various aspects of concrete design and detailing have been published but this is believed to be the first comprehensive detailing manual. The aim of this book is to cover a wide range of topics, so simplifying and reducing the work required to prepare structural drawings and details in reinforced, prestressed, precast and composite concrete. The book initially provides a list of extracts from relevant codes and current practices. Where drawings are carried out using imperial units, a conversion table is provided to change them into SI units.

  • This work develops and defends a structural view of the nature of mathematics, which is used to explain a number of striking features of mathematics that have puzzled philosophers for centuries. It rejects the most widely held philosophical view of mathematics (Platonism), according to which mathematics is a science dealing with mathematical objects such as sets and numbers—objects which are believed not to exist in the physical world.

  • This paper proposes a new class-based m e t h o d to estimate the strength of association in word co-occurrence for the purpose of structural disambiguation. To deal with sparseness of data, we use a conceptual dictionary as the source for acquiring upper classes of the words related in t h e co-occurrence, and then use t-scores to determine a pair of classes to be employed for calculating the strength of association. We have applied our m e t h o d to determining dependency relations in Japanese and prepositional phrase attachments in English. ...

  • The Head-driven Phrase Structure G r a m m a r project ( H P S G ) is an English language database query system under development at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories. Unlike other product-oriented efforts in the natural language understanding field, the H P S G system was designed and implemented by linguists on the basis of recent theoretical developments. But, unlike other implementations of linguistic theories, this system is not a toy, as it deals with a variety of practical problems not covered in the theoretical literature. ...

  • Use of Lambek's (1958) categorial grammar for linguistic work has generally been rather limited. There appear to be two main reasons for this: the notations most commonly used can sometimes obscure the structure of proofs and fail to clearly convey linguistic structure, and the cMculus as it stands is apparently not powerful enough to describe many phenomena encountered in natural language. In this paper we suggest ways of dealing with both these deficiencies.

  • We present a learning framework for structured support vector models in which boosting and bagging methods are used to construct ensemble models. We also propose a selection method which is based on a switching model among a set of outputs of individual classifiers when dealing with natural language parsing problems.

  • Thls article deals with the interpretation of conceptual operations underlying the communicative use of natural language (NL) within the Structured Inheritance Network (Sl-Nets) paradigm. The operations are reduced to functions of a f o ~ a l language, thus changing the level of abstraction of the operations to be performed on SI-Nets. In this sense, operations on SI-Nets are not merely isomorphic to single epistemologleal objects, but can be viewed as a simulation of processes on a different level, that pertaining to the conceptual system of NL.

  • In this presentation, we covered: Dealing with node-based allocation with arrays; internally, it is still a linked list, only the nodes are contiguous in memory; it is no longer necessary to call the operating system for each new node; doubling the memory used is straight-forward; to halve the memory used, we just follow the linked list.

  • From 1992 to 2000, the pace of merger activity rose to unprecedented levels. An environment of sustained economic growth and rising stock prices facilitated transactions. Toward the end of 2000, the economic climate shifted and merger activity in the fourth quarter declined. The economy showed only small growth during the first quarter of 2001. Excess capacity in a number of industries had developed, and sales and profit disappointments began to widen. The business cycle had returned. Valuations in Internet companies and other high-tech industries have been sharply revised downward.

  • The mitigation of earthquake-related hazards represents a key role in the modern society. The mitigation of such kind of hazards spans from detailed studies on seismicity, evaluation of site effects, and seismo-induced landslides, tsunamis as well as and the design and analysis of structures to resist such actions. The study of earthquakes ties together science, technology and expertise in infrastructure and engineering in an effort to minimize human and material losses when they inevitably occur.

  • There is a choice of books on securitization, collateralized debt obligations (CDOs), and structured credit products. In fact, both of us have written other books on the subject. This book, however, was conceived as a short, handy and easy-to-comprehend guide to securitization, minus technical details. The idea originated while both of us were working on a comprehensive article on securitization: One which says it all in a limited space and serves as a curtain-raiser on the subject.
