Computer-based systems known as decision support systems (DSS) play a vital role in helping professionals across various fields of practice understand what information is needed, when it is needed, and in what form in order to make smart and valuable business decisions. Providing a unique combination of theory, applications, and technology,
DSS Case Study: A knowledge-based Decision Support System for enterprise mergers and acquisitions includes Introduction, Mergers and acquisition method and process, The architecture of the knowledge-based DSS, Conclusions.
After reading this chapter, you should be able to answer the following questions: Why is it hard for people to make good decisions? How do models help managers make better decisions? What are the key elements of decision support systems? How is data mining different from traditional statistical analysis? What is the purpose of OLAP? What is a digital dashboard? What are the advantages of an EIS? How can a GIS help managers make better decisions?
Decision Support Systems: Chapter 1 - Management Support Systems - An Overview presents about Managers and decision making, Managerial decision making and information systems, A framework for decision making, The concept of decision support systems, Executive Information Systems.
Decision Support Systems: Chapter 2 - Decision - Making Systems, Models, and Support presents about Decision making, A preview of the modeling process, Decision making, Evaluation, Decision making, How decision are supported, Human cognition and decision styles.
Decision Support Systems: Chapter 3 - Decision Support Systems - An Overview provides about Decision Support Systems, Characteristics and capabilities of DSS, DSS components, Data Management Subsystem, Model Management Subsystem.
Decision Support Systems: Chapter 5 - Data Management includes Data, Information, Knowledge; Data collection, problems and quality; Database Management Systems in DSS; Data warehousing; OLAP; Data Mining; Data Visualization and Multidimensionality; GIS.
Decision Support Systems: Chapter 6 - Decision Support System Development provides about the system development life cycle Tools; Alternative development methodologies; DSS development methodology; DSS technology levels and tools; DSS development tool selection; Team developed DSS; User developed DSS.
In this chapter students will be able to: Identify the changes taking place in the form and use of decision support in business, identify the role and reporting alternatives of management information systems, describe how online analytical processing can meet key information needs of managers,...
Decision support systems (DSS) have evolved over the past four decades from
theoretical concepts into real world computerized applications. DSS architecture contains
three key components: a knowledge base, a computerized model, and a user interface. DSS
simulate cognitive decision-making functions of humans based on artificial intelligence
methodologies (including expert systems, data mining, machine learning, connectionism,
logistical reasoning, etc.) in order to perform decision support functions.
What are decision support
- Computer systems that assist decision
- Combine “machine” or “artificial intelligence” with
information about the domain of interest
- Intended to make knowledge more readily
available at the point of care
Pacing through second decade of the 21th century, more computer users are widely adopting technology-based tools and information-enriched databases to focus on supporting managerial decision making, reducing preventable faults and improving outcome forecasting. The goal of decision support systems (DSS) is to develop and deploy information technology-based systems in supporting efficient practice in multidiscipline domains. This book aims to portray a pragmatic perspective of applying DSS in the 21th century.
This book has been made possible by a sea of efforts. Collating this book was a labour of love. I share the
topic of Decision-making support systems with the reader with a sense of zeal and oceans of enthusiasm.
I think that these attributes are reflected in this book and perhaps make it better.
I wish to thank Sophie Tergeist from Bookboon Ltd for her guidance and Shafaqat Hussain for designing
the cover of this book.
Each chapter in this book was subject to a previous peer-review process.
